    Exhaust wrap

Seeing as I'm an idiot and keep burning my leg on the exhaust, and I'm far too stupid to simply stop touching the exhaust, I was thinking of using some exhaust wrap on the exposed part of the midpipe. But being that I ride a big single, I dont want to smother it and not let a lot of heat come off. So how much does exhaust wrap keep the heat in, and is there any better suggestion.

That's a titanium header, yes? If so, you do not want to wrap it as that'll guarantee more cracks.

    Re: Exhaust wrap

Since no one else mentioned it. Heat wrap does not reduce the heat of the pipe all that much. Yes it keeps the heat in the pipe longer, but I still melted a pair of boots on my wrapped pipes. A heat shield will do better.

    Re: Exhaust wrap

hence why i mentioned the ceramic.

also if your pipe has a catalytic converter of baffles in the slip on then they are building up excess heat.

you could also use heat reflective tape.

but the wrap will reduce the radiant temps but will increase the actual exhaust temps.

IE it will not emit heat as far as open metal but it will still burn to the touch if not become hotter.

and i also found there is a rattle can ceramic coating that you can spray over the fiberglass exhaust wrap that will aid in reducing the temps.

    Re: Exhaust wrap

I like the wrap. I have it on my mid pipes and no you dont want to grab it because its still hot, but it wont peel your skin off like a bare pipe will. It does increase the temp on your exhaust coming out the tail pipe because the heat does not dissipate prior to that. I have also heard that heat wrap can promote rusting because as the pipes cool, the wrap retains moisture that is then held against the pipe. I have mine wrapped and spray coated with sylicone high temp paint. looks good and more importantly does not burn my flip-flops.

    Re: Exhaust wrap

I shoulda mentioned this is on my KTM 690SMC, not the race bike. But there are heat shields but they just dont extend far enough forward, and I tend to bump the exposed pipe now and again at stop lights and stuff. I dont need anything that will keep it cool to to the touch or anything, but just keep me from burning myself on the occasional bump.

    Re: Exhaust wrap

Been wrapping mine for years, if you do your be sure and spray paint with the protective paint, if not it won't last more than a season. does it reduce the burn factor on skin and shoes? yes but its still hot. It does increase the combustion chamber temp but some bikes like that so I have read.

    Stop riding foot out!

Seriously though, get a little heel guard or something & throw it on there.

It's right where the pipe bends, making a non custom heat shield awkward.

Yah, its this area. My pants are all burned, and when you put your foot down it tends to hit.

    STOP RIDING IN SHORTS!
Guys what about wrapping your legs ?

    Well here's what I did.

Wrapped the pipe plus put that metallic heat insulation tape
on the back of my heat shields. Its totally bearable now.
Before its sucked at red lights something fierce.

As I understand it wrapping your pipe also helps performance a bit by
allowing the hot gases freer passage out the back.
