Broken bolt

Just as a note as I follow this thread, motor mount bolts do not need or want Loctite. If anything, they need never-sieze on there for the previously mentioned dis-similar metals reason. When properly installed, they will not work loose by themselves. In the event that a bolt breaks in a fall, they are infinitely easier to get out if there is not Loctite gumming up the threads. If you have used Loctite, I would suggest using a propane torch to melt the loctite just prior to attempting any extraction (EZ-out or similar intalled and ready to go).

Lots of good advice on getting the first EZ-out removed on this thread. Worst case here is the the bolt gets drilled out until all the garbage is gone, trying again with a new EZ-out and then heli coiling the threads. Fun stuff.....

Eric, don't the slider instructions say to use blue loctite?

Those front motor mount bolts on the gixxer have a lock bolt on them. They should never have loctite on them.

so Degs, what's the next plan? drop the motor, try heat, drill out that EZ out and try again?

Take front fairing off and use a drift to try to knock out the stuck EZ out. Then drill out the bolt to get a bigger EZ out in there I think.

You made me go back and read all of the instructions we ever made for sliders......and I was glad to see that we have never asked riders to use Blue Loctite. In the a couple of the more recent ones we added the Never Sieze recommendation as well. I've got someone on updating all of them at present.

thanks Eric. i know the rearsets say to use blue loctite, and i thought the sliders did too.

i ordered a new slider bracket & puck on Monday asking to get it by Wedneday, but it sounds like I obviously wont be installing it this week.

Loctite on a motor mount bolt....not too big a mistake. If you guys want some stories, I've got plenty after 16 years of selling aftermarket parts.....some people shouldn't be allowed to touch tools - ever.

Idiot resistant doesn't work either, they keep producing craftier idiots.

BTW, I have a set of EZ-Outs. They are used as a paperweight because as you screw them in with their left-hand spiral "fluting", they spread-out the body of the screw. That makes it even harder to get the broken screw/bolt out. If I have a broken bolt to remove it I get the offending assembly onto the Bridgeport and get it out using a variety of solid carbide tools, left hand drills, picks and other stuff as the situation can vary.

If in the field and this is not practical, use these spline drive type of screw extractors. They are far better!
