    Clutch question

Ok, lets hear from the masses.

Its an 01 RC 51 (hydraulic Clutch). Lately I've been feeling surging in traffic when I'm going slow (1st Gear mostly). Today I put it up on the stands to clean it and figured I would check the chain for tension.

When I run it (let the wheel spin an 1st gear) the chain visibly jumps every 5-10 seconds, it seems to go away when I speed it up (keep in mind the rear wheel is up on the stand and I'm sitting watching it). When this happens you can hear a "clunk"

I checked the chain tension and we are good at all points.

There is no binding of any sort (actually this is a brand new DID chain I put on last fall before I stored the bike for the winter)

I checked the front sprocket thinking it might be warped or loose but we are good there too.

Now I am thinking the "clunk" is similar enough to when you drop into 1st gear from neutral that maybe its the clutch and the bike is jumping gear.

Final thought - it cant be oil as I am running motorcycle specific Mobil1.

Does this sound like I need a new clutch?

    Feedback appreciated.

100% normal. With no load on the wheel it will do exactly as you described. Mine would do the same thing on the stand. Its just how the transmission works.

    Re: Clutch question

Yeah, that's not entirely out of the ordinary. Most big twins are a little lumpy at slow speeds.

A throttle body sync might help smooth things out.

    Re: Clutch question

actually, I'm kind of used to the bumpiness at low end, I was just worried when I saw the chain jumping. Now its back to all love with the bike and me.
