    Chain Cleaning

    hey all,
just wondering what everyone uses to clean the chain. i have a o1 F4i and some people told me WD40 is good but others say it will eat the o-rings. Help! what do i do?!?! i bought the bike used with 13k (ish) miles, it is worth replacing the chain to be safe? it is showing a few tiny spot of rust on the out side of some of the links....

    WD40 won't eat O-rings, from everything that I've read.

that's what I use... and Chain Wax to lube...

After 13k miles if it is the original chain replace it and the spockets.

WD40 is fine but Parraffin is better (that's Keresene to you colonials)

Yeah, I spelled it different 3 times and it still didn't look right so I went with the one that looked most right, but I knew I screwed up somewhere.

    Kerosene is where it's at.

Does anyone clean it while still on the bike. If you had a clip on style master instead of a rivet then there is really no excuse for not removing it.

But if you have a rivet type master then it's a little more work!!

i go one further than just leaving it on... i wait til after a ride so its warm, put the bike on the rear stand, and then into first gear, and oh so gently clean the chain rolling by, then a good spray shower of solvent, then dry rag to remove excess fluids and chain wax/lube it.
for solvent... kerosene or wd-40, whichever i have more of on that given day.
it works. but be sure you have a stable rear stand. and not much common sense.

Do a search on the internet for something called the grunge brush, trust me it works awesome. People always ask me how I keep my chain so clean. It really makes things easy.

Try a fireplace store, or a lantern store, or REI... I buy my kerosene at a an antique store in framingham (They sell it for the lanterns), but camping stores also usually have it.

    Cheers,
    Chris

But when we ride very fast motorcycles, we ride with immaculate sanity. We might abuse a substance here and there, but only when it's right. The final measure of any rider's skill is the inverse ratio of his preferred Traveling Speed to the number of bad scars on his body. It is that simple: If you ride fast and crash, you are a bad rider. If you go slow and crash, you are a bad rider. And if you are a bad rider, you should not ride motorcycles.

Hardware stores usually carry Kerosene in 1 gal cans. You can find it along with paint thinners and such. 1 gal goes a long way.

    more thanx!

we don't seem to have anything Agway-like 'round these parts... but mebbe this is one of those things that "real" hardware stores carry that you can't get in the big home improvement chain stores.

I use kerosene or Dubbya-D to clean. Just be sure to wipe ALL the excess off after cleaning. That shit'll make a mess on your next ride if you don't clean it ALL off!

Then I always lube with chain wax, per manu's instructions...
