    Compression Tester

I'd like to replace my compression tester but not very keen on spending $100-200+ on an infrequently used tool.

Was checking out this Lisle tester and the Pit Posse. For $40 on Amazon the Pit Posse seems like it might be the way to go.

    Any other recommendations?

    Re: Compression Tester

Yeah, like less than $40ish seems right.
Of course I don't know why you'd want to replace one.
Just test the one you have. If it works, keep using it.

Have an old HF one that I only used a handful of times, but tried on multiple running bikes and only ever hits 35-40psi.

    Re: Compression Tester

Try replacing the Schrader valve in the hose first. It should be the same as any tire valve stem.

I like my OTC Deluxe. Can be had for $66ish, or the basic one for $55ish.

What's the difference between a bolt and a screw?
First you screw, then you bolt.

You get better results if the bike isn't running
The Schrader valve in the hose may be either hanging open or clogged with crud. They're a special low spring pressure design so the compression pushes it open. NOT a tire valve core.
I use an OTC 5604, but they're closer to $95 than $40. No experience with the Pit Posse. Lisle is generally good, but the attached hose and extra purchase adapters are weird.

I just put my thumb over the hole, if it pushes it off, good to go.

Yeah, I bought one at autozone as well.

    Re: Compression Tester

I also have an OTC kit. And it works well.

Be ware that for bikes you want the OTC 5604 kit Doug mentions. Not the OTC 5605, like I bought. The 05 kit has different adapters and doesn't work as well with deeply recessed plug holes.. like those you find on OHV engines.. which almost all motorcycles are. I make the 05 kit work, but get the 04 kit instead.

    I spent closer to $70.

Well now you tell me, you know how hard it was to get that reading?

That OTC looks like a nice little setup, a bit pricey but not terrible.

I became suspicious of the Pit Posse when I noticed they sell my $10 Harbor Freight digital calipers for $35.

    Re: Compression Tester

i have a brand new, unused, INNOVA 3612 comp tester i can't use due to space issues on the RR. the adapter is too long, i can't fit it under frame.

if you're interested, let me know. i'd be good with shipping + 2 bucks for a roadie in return (?)

    Re: Compression Tester

Actually I pulled the trigger on that OTC 5604. Looks pretty solid, exactly what I need, and hoping I'll have it in the toolkit for a lot of years.

    Thanks guys

Put it in the go-kart and the next time you're blasting through at mach 1.5 along 195 stop in and I'll provide enough roadies to make your final approach questionable.

I fix cars for a living and I've only used mine one more time than you have in the past 4 years.
