Do I need moto specific coolant for the bikes? Any particular type or brand? I need to swap from water and wetter.....

Also, what needs to be done when switching over for the winter....do I need to flush it, run it, make sure something else happens to ensure all the water is out??

    Thanks

Name brand automotive should be fine. If you want to take the easy way out - get the premixed. You should be able to just drain the water/wetter out, tip the bike over to get as much as you can. Fill it up, squeeze the radiator hoses, refill, run it, refill, check the next morning.

You don't wanna get '...all the water out...' as the coolant mixes with water anyway...

    Shopping list:
-DISTILLED WATER (from your local grcoery store, NOT spring water)
-ALUMINUM SAFE coolant (from your local McAuto parts chain, nothing special other than that)

-Drain what's in your system now (I'm guessing just water & some pump lubricant)

-Refill with a 50/50 mixture of ALUMINUM SAFE coolant and DISTILLED water

-Run, check level in reservoir, top off if necessary

I was under the impression engine ice is to keep the bike running cooler in the summer. However, switching to coolant is so the water does not freeze in the bike over the winter. Engine ice does not have anti-freezing properties so the water would freezign cracking bike parts you dont want cracked. I could be wrong though

I think you are wrong. The bottle says safe to -26 degrees. Im pretty sure it is an antifreeze as well.

    Correct! You are wrong!

Engine ice is an anti-freeze. It's propylene glycol.

Manny, get some motorcycle coolant from your local dealer or go to pep boys/autozone and get some coolant that exceeds or meets the standards set in your owners manual.

    derek

Dennis, is this the 18" rain tire story again?

Take a breath, sit back and think about it.

Why did we ALL drain our fluids and put in water?

    ??????

Like Jankster used to say 'Never let the talent near the technology" LOL

Thats why I recomended the premixed stuff. If you're working on a car or truck - the regular coolant and distilled water are a good idea because you use a few gallons at a clip. Doing a bike typically uses less then a gallon total.

'cos the tech guy doesn't know what he's talking about. Glycol is the slippery stuff. Engine ice is propylene glycol so it's NOT approved for racing...or VIR. It is "anti-freeze" therefore not allowed.

    Just discussed this with manny.

I'm gonna contact the track and ask them the definitive answer to this.

The web site says no anti-freeze. Well, engine ice is an anti-freeze, but they may just mean generic green anti-freeze.

    derek

you are not confused (at least not in this thread anyhow ). I was and I still am. However, the reason this became an issue was cause of tech at VIR last week.

I think im just going to run engine Ice b/c the duc runs so bloody hot that if it cools it even a little more that'll be nice.
