    Anybody got a dial indicator?

you looking to mic em for thickness or check their runout?

a easy method to check runout would be to mark graduations on their outermost edge, press the center flat on a flat granite surface or formica countertop and shove some feeler gauges under different parts of it. Flip and repeat.

It wouldn't give you machining tolerances but it might give you a rough idea whats up..if they were warped or no.

But assuming they're floaters, you might need something as a reference like an old westcott steel rule or something to place under the shim...but it will make it harder to be consistent.

I've got a 6" calibrated digital Mitutoyo caliper I could loan ya if you still need it. It's good down to .01 mm and .001 in.

I've got a decent micrometer and a not so decent(but it works!) dial indicator. What are you measuring for, thickness or runout? Derry's not too far from me, let me know.

    Anybody got a dial indicator?

The rotors in question are OEM rotors of a 98 zx6r, I believe they're stainless semi-floater on a magnesium carrier.

They were on the zx6r I bought with 6k on the clock. Stopped fine with mild pressure, never felt much in the way of lever twitch. But under hard braking they pulsed like the world was about to end.

Swapped them out with a pair of used oem ebay rotors, new pads, stainless lines. That cured things nicely but I've got a spare set of rims and I'm tired of swapping rotors.

I was told that it was most likely crap on the rotors and a good pass with steel wool would clear the problem up; or if not that, the carriers might be bent and could be wedged back into place.

I'm way out of my element here; I've got a cheap formica dining room table, never thought that I could use it to check the rotors but that would be cool. Basically trying to avoid fudging with the rotors, mounting them up and finding that they're still fucked. I've been looking for another cheap set on ebay but I keep getting outbid, so I was thinking there might be some way to check if the extra rotors I have were salvageable or should be tossed in the trash.

    Thanks for the help,
    Darrell

You can use a piece of glass or a mirror as a flat surface also to use feeler gauges.

I got a dial indicator and lots of experience with measuring runout and bending rotors back into shape. Lemme know if you wanna do 'em up.

Thanks Dave! Was good to see you again and meet some of the guys from work you ride with, and I really appreciate the explanation of how to fix rotors and the use of your dial indicator. Did a few hard stops on the way back and so far the rotors seem great, couldn't find any pulsing. Woohoo!

My pleasure. Thank you for helping out with Lei and Chad's bikes. So far that's two good reports. Waiting to hear back from Lei.
