DIY how to re-key the lock

Somehow in the aftermath of the crash seat lock on my Tuono got lost, so for a while I was prowling evilBay hoping to get something, anything, then called AF1...

$19.XX got me a brand new lock with 2 new keys (best evilBay had to offer was $40 with 1 key or $30 without any keys)

Now I'm getting greedy, was happy just getting ANY lock but now I want to have a single key to use on all locks, asked locksmith next door for a quote, he wants $30, I know the guy, he ain't to bright, so I figured this has to be something I can do myself.

    So here's my re-key DIY.

    *DISCLAIMER*
I am not a locksmith but I have years of experience doing things and even some certifications.
This may or may not work for your application, so at your own risk, etc...

Step 1: take photos, glad I did: the thingy that catches the cable can go in 8 different ways and that's just facing one way, so 16 possible ways to assemble it.

remove screw, washer, cable pull and spring.

Insert key, with small screwdriver or pick push in the silver plate, it's spring-loaded, then pull lock cylinder out

now insert new key and file down all the pins that stick out EXCEPT FOR THE VERY LAST ONE, it's there to keep the lock from turning too far or falling apart

reverse procedure to install, insert key, use small screw driver or pick to press the spring-loaded tab down and feed the lock back in the cylinder

if done right your new and old key will now work in the lock.

Total Cost under $20, result priceless!!!

One time I lost my trunk key. So I went thru the back seat and popped the trunk. Removed the lock assembly. Took apart the cylinder and rearranged the pins (tumblers) to fit the key I had from a different car.

That's a pretty interesting way to solve the problem. Glad it worked for you, thanks for posting.

But Locksmiths will be free once we start feeling the Bern.

The way I solved the problem is same way any locksmith would, there is no other cost effective way to do it, except to call Aprilia factory and order uncut tumblers, while they will most likely tell you to piss off...

As for "feeling the Bern" comment, that's pretty much the dumbest thing I've read all day, just shows how ignorant you are

I was just saying that I was glad it worked for you, there was no demeaning tone meant. Never had a tumbler of this type apart so I was just stating it was interesting to see someone take the initiative to do a fix. Sorry if you took it the wrong way.

As for the Bern comment, it was simply meant in jest with all the media we've endured lately with the local campaigning. And it's still early, I hope someone can beat my ignorance. If not, guess I'll wear that one with pride.

Didn't men to be a dick, pretty sure what I did is what every locksmith would do while telling you it was something complicated, but all they have for tools is screwdrivers and files, they file everything down. My neighbor also charges an arm and a leg, I had AF1 clone a key for me for $30, cost under $50 including shipping both ways, my neighbor told me $350! Then $300... now he is down to $100, kinda glad to stick it to him

As for the "Bern", I think he has great ideas that everyone dismisses because no one actually bothers to understand what he is saying, your comment about "free locksmith" sounds like a product of smear campaigns from opposition and being posted on a DIY thread...
I just had the guy tell me the other day that Bernie does not deserve any airtime or support because according to him he is the same kind socialist we fought in WW2, because Hitler was a socialist... and then he brought up a long list of Dictators from Pol Pot to Saddam because they are just like Bernie!

AF1 is great. When I had my Ape they were very helpful.

No I get the Bernie thing. I just couldn't figure out a way to link a wall and a locksmith. But in my eyes, they are all fair game.

Re: DIY how to re-key the lock

Politics is a dirty business, this whole business with SuperDelegates is yet another proof that no matter what party you vote the system is rigged...

Meanwhile I got a new top clamp installed tonight and the efing handlebars are still crooked (new handlebars too!)

Can't believe I was so dumb not to check the top of the "U-clamp" that bad boy is twisted like a prop! On the old ones they came as 2 separate clamps but Gen 2 is one piece

I actually thought the risers were damaged and the are not available separately from the clamp, when I called AF1 trying to get the part numbers for the riser insulators etc, they told me "bad news none of those parts are available separately, good news it's only $130"

Win a little loose a little...

Remember many parts are interchangeable between Aprilia and Moto Guzzi. Many of the parts on my Guzzi were stamped Aprilia. A lot of Aprilia parts end up on Guzzis and vice versa. Maybe poke around Guzzi sites to see if something available there would fit your Aprilia.

Already replaced most expensive part because of this damage (see pics) first I replaced bent hardware, but when I saw crooked handlebars just assumed that risers were bent (rubber-mounted doh!)

but turns out it's a 42$ part that was warped (already ordered from AF1)
