Bumping this old thread to keep the chain education in one place. I would have said "to keep it all linked" but puns like that are just ridiculous.
Moving on...
What's the difference between a $50 chain and a $150 chain? Marketing? Materials? Magic? Is there enough difference in wear, care, etc to justify the price difference?
I'm gonna take a wild ass guess that a $50 chain is a non-sealed, non o or x-ring type chain. While the $150 chain has little seals on each and every roller that makes it last eleventy billion times longer with a fraction of the maintenance.
Usually you get what you pay for. Although sometimes you don't.

Lmgtfy.
I took the stock z1000 #525 chain & sprockets and the #520 chain & sprockets to the Post Office. I wanted to know REALLY how much weigh U are loosing with doing this conversion. I also had a Vortex 40 tooth aluminum sprocket so I took that along with me also, just to see how light it is.
525
525 chain 112 links 4 lbs 11 oz
525 42 tooth rear 2 lbs 1 oz
525 17 tooth frt 9 oz
520
520 chain 112 links 3 lbs 14 oz
520 43 tooth rear 1 lbs 13 oz
520 17 tooth frt 7 oz
Vortex 520 40 tooth rear sprocket 11 oz !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Difference
13 oz chain
4 oz rear sprocket
2 oz front sprocket
1 lbs 6oz Vortex rear sprocket over stock
Total weight of chain and sprockets were:
525 stock weight 7 lbs 5 oz
520 conversion 6 lbs 2 oz (Steel rear sprocket)
520 conversion 5 lbs (vortex Aluminum sprocket)

That's where I learned it, gaming against Koreans, I always assumed it was due to variations in pronunciation/alphabet differences. Never occurred to me that it could be simpler and just how they laugh.

I have almost nothing to add to the chain discussion because it's stupid.
If you're at the absolute top of your racing game, and are fighting for miniscule fractions of a second... switch to a lighter chain and sprockets. Otherwise, leave it the hell alone.

Alternatively, if, like was the case when I replaced the chain on Jess's bike earlier this year, a lightweight sprocket and chain pack can be had for significantly less than stock stuff, change it.

Here is a good article on a bicycle chain.

D.I.D 520 ERV chain and Superlite sprockets. You can get them as a set from sprocketcenter.com.
The sprockets are all steel, which last longer than aluminum and are only a couple of ounces heavier than aluminum sprockets, because of pattern cut into them.
