    Electrical Question

Buddies 2007 GSXR 750 was purchased with a bad regulator rectifier (i'll call it an rr from here on in)...

He replaced it and a few days later had a nice little fire, melted the 3 ac wires coming from the stator and their connector.

I go over and check things out.

After first making all the necessary gixxer jokes I...

Test DC voltage at battery and find it to be low (13.5 at 5k rpms)
Test AC voltage at each phase of stator (50 at 5k to 150 at near redline)
Test the stator resistances and all in spec.
I then pull the rr off the bike and the first thing I notice is the connector after voltage has been converted is loose (It just falls off with next to no force.)

My theory: The loose connector caused a poor ground, causing the new rectifier to be unable to dump the extra voltage properly causing heating up etc. wrecking wires and the new rectifier.

This hinges on a couple things that I hope someone can clear up:

The rectifier's main ground source is through the connector, not through the bolts that hold it to the frame?
The stator's output is not too high at near redline?

Just figured I'd post my thought process here so it can be picked apart, as I am no expert. Comments?

You are correct in the ground assumption. The voltage sounds good also. The poor ground is what did for the RR
