    Ex500 issues

So I got an issue with the ex500 I picked up. One of my cylinders is running cold. Like when the bike is up to temp I can touch the left side of the header. But I can't touch the right side. You can also feel the difference in exhaust gas temp. Now I cleaned the carbs good and changed the plugs. That took care of the running ruff for the most part.
When I'm riding and let off the throttle I get some popping.
Where should I look to try and solve this? I'm not too carburetor savvy.

EX500s most common problem is the cheap blade connector to the coil. Check there first.

Did you take one spark plug cap off and see if it runs any different?

    No I did not.
I will also check the blade connector.

    Re: Ex500 issues

Does it 'come into it' with throttle and revs, or is it just one lunging it the whole time?

As noted, check the basics first, do you have spark, when you pull the plug to inspect it is it wet or dry? From there, is there gas in the bowl of that carb?

Just message BJ on Facebook. Literally, about anything EX related. He's forgotten more about EXs than Kurlon knows about rulebooks.

Bring it with you this weekend to the track when you come to meet BJ and the remnants of the EX Mafia to snag a bellypan. One way or the other you'll leave with a running bike.

The one on the right came from the cylinder that was running good the one on the left came from the cylinder was running bad what do you guys think I'm currently swapping the ignition coils to see if the problem Falls are cylinder.

    Re: Ex500 issues

Ok got the coils swapped and the problem is still in the left cylinder. It did not follow. So I'm gonna assume the ignition system is good and say it's a carb issue. Any thoughts

    Re: Ex500 issues

Just to make sure, pull the bad plug, put the lead on it and hold THE BOOT so the plug is pressed up against something metal, turn it over and verify you see spark. Could be a bad pickup / CDI which would give you the current symptom set of no fire on one side. (If you hold the plug itself, and it fires, expect a new hairstyle.)

Yeah that was the first thing I did and both plugs are getting spark

Ok, so yeah it's either a lack of compression or something carb related. Do EX500 carbs have bowl drain screws? If so, turn the fuel off then drain the bad carb's bowl and see if anything comes out.

Ok, so you know fuel is getting to that carb. On my GS both carbs had vacuum nipples for syncing that normally have caps blocking them off. Anything like that on the EX carbs? Also, when it's running, if you bring the revs up/give it some throttle does the bad cylinder come into it at all?

Both carbs have a vacuum line one is capped one is left in the open.
And yes when I get up around 6 K it seems to come in

Now we're getting somewhere, fire the bike up, put your finger over that vacuum line and see what happens. Additionally, with the bike running and that line blocked, spray some parts cleaner at the carb boots so you get some around the interface between the carb and boot and see if the bike's behavior suddenly changes.

That nipple typically is hooked up to a vacuum operated petcock.....

I started it up and put my finger Over the Hole the RPM picked up but it seem to run a bit more shity. I sprayed some starter fluid on the boots and it really didn't seem to do anything. I sprayed about 5 times and 2 out of those five times the idol picked up like some fluid is making it in.

    Re: Ex500 issues

So, question 1) Why is that vacuum port left open? Is there a line to the petcock from somewhere else, or has the petcock been gutted so it doesn't need vacuum to operate? If the answer is gutted petcock, cap that vacuum port.

From there, might be worth looking over those intake boots for tears, but given it was a semi inconclusive spray test (if you had a proper rip the revs would JUMP) I'm betting they aren't the major issue you're chasing now.

Ya I don't think the boots are any of the issue as well. Digging around the vacuum line went to some sort of Emissions Control.
