    F4i Maintenance

Going to change the coolant in my bike as its about 10 years old....only 12k miles on it but I think its time to change it.

How many quarts do I need? I thought i had read 4 somewhere, but some other posts on forums say only 3.... I trust you Nesr'ins so help me out.

I just fill it up after draining.....then burp it...then fill it up again while burping.

Changed the coolant today.... Only took 2 quarts tho. Manual said it should take close to 3. I followed the instructions in the manual... How the hell did I miss a quart in there?
I took out the drain plug and drained the overflow hose....

Pretty sure my 600rr only takes 2 usually. Did you drain the engine block and the water pump drain?

Pic above is right side of bike. Notice the empty screw hole.

    WTF goes here?

There is a bolt on the other side that is in the same position.

    Re: F4i Maintenance

could it be a blank hole used in manufacturing and left there
    or
they use the engine block in another bike and on yours it's not used (F4i and 600RR are the same engine with a few modifications ?)
    or
maybe an option you don't have. do they make engine block heater for bikes? I thought I saw one for my bike before

If your bike isn't missing anything I would worry about it.

The hole is threaded... That's why I am puzzled.

Just switched out the oem air filter for a k&n.

Any idea why the oem has 2 pieces of plastic that sort of flare up, while the k&n doesn't?

I am not even going to read this whole shitshow.

You know how many quarts you need ZERO. It's a fuckin honda who gives a fuck that the coolant is 10yrs old. Just run the thing already.

    Because the K&N is aftermarket.

Asking that is along the lines of asking why a slip-on exhaust is louder than stock.

    Still a legitimate question tho...
Wondering what the purpose of those flares on the oem are as they are pretty large.

    Re: F4i Maintenance

i will answer without seeing what you are talking about.....i think they are for keeping the air filter in place.
aftermarkets do not have these as they know better.

Honda engineering sometimes goes overboard.....you will know what i am talking about if you DIY Honda's...perfect
example is the brake rotors on Honda cars, they have a screw that bolts on to the hub.....the rest of the world dont do this
hence any aftermarket you get for honda rotors will not have the hole for the bolt.

    (not my picture)
Notice the 2 wing/flap things on the front of the oem air filter. The k&n lacks this.

    Ride more. Worry less.

I'm going to guess that those are there to reduce the amount of intake noise because I know when I'm using all the power on mine it's effin' loud underneath that fuel tank.

FWIW; the BMC in my F4i doesn't have those either.

    Re: F4i Maintenance

Those big friggin fins? They look very much like air directors. Like bergs said probably acoustic. Never owned an f4i but worked on Honda's cars with friends. They do all kinds of weird shite when it comes to intake piping etc. Just ride the thing if you notice something adverse after changing the filter deal with it then. If not don't worry about it.

    Re: F4i Maintenance

Definitely not worrying about it, just curiosity.

I have ridden about 150 miles with the k&n air filter and havent noticed anything really different yet. Acoustic-wise I actually thought it has sounded a little bit quieter with the k&n.
