Fork Seals Anyone?

    Fork Seals Anyone?

Im looking to have my fork seals replaced on a 98 zx6r, but I refuse to go to a dealer. I usually do all of my own work but I have never pulled apart a fork before. I figured I would see if anyone local wanted to make some bucks and possibly teach me a little?

Bike currently has the plastics and fender off. I just got my new clutch, clutch cable, brake pads and parts back from paint... so Im itching to have this done!

    Re: Fork Seals Anyone?

There's a few instructional videos on youtube for fork seal replacement. You might need a couple specialty tools. I know motion pro makes a fork tool kit, but you'll need to know your diameters on seals.
Make sure you do dust and oil seals and add the correct amount of oil.
Do you have a manual? They usually have a good tutorial, it'll pay for itself.

GMD is my recommendation as well. He is the go to guy for any suspension work.

    Re: Fork Seals Anyone?

I had a dealer replace them on my ZX10R and was very satisfied with their work. The dealer is only 2 miles from my house which influenced my decision to some degree out of convenience. I also had GMD do the forks on my GSXR. Both did an equally nice job.

    Re: Fork Seals Anyone?

If you do most of your own work, I'd recommend figuring out your forks too. Not too complicated to just change the oil and seals...especially if you have a manual or can find a couple good videos. If you're not a fumbling fool in the garage...you'll be fine. Go for it!

If you don't have the faith...PK at GMD is a stud and will get things working as they should.

    Re: Fork Seals Anyone?

Ill check into GMD. I didn't spend a lot on the bike, so i'd prefer not to spend a lot on having the work done. I may attempt it myself, I am confident in my own skills, ill just have to research some more.

    Re: Fork Seals Anyone?

Fork seals are easy. You need the factory service manual (not the Haynes junk) and you need to read it very closely and follow every direction carefully. If you do that, every single job becomes an easy job.
