Really there is no universally Correct answer here. For me Im a Ride more wrench less kind of guy. But if you put a Premium on doing it yourself and have the time to do it. Have at it. Maybe if I had a garage I did not have to drive to I would feel differently.
Either way its fun as shit.

No Rich, I'm talking about a bike that is already borked and will require some amount of extensive work (and $$$) in order to get it moving under its own power again which, cost-wise, will land her exactly where she would be if she picked up a prepped bike...difference is, this bike won't even have emulators thrown into the cost at that point, nevermind a full suspension upgrade.
For the price and situation of this machine, that bike is good for spares and nothing more. It's just not worth it, IMO.
To give you a reference of where I'm coming from based on my personal experience, I bought my race-prepped 2002 F4i for just a tick over 2k in fully operational condition......and mind you that price was with plenty of spares. First thing I did was take everything apart to ensure the entire bike was up to my standards as well as making sure it was fully serviced. That work cost me next to zero extra dollars to do this as well as giving me peace of mind that the entire bike was gone thru.
...and don't forget, it came with spares.
Point is, the money it will take to get this thing going again will land the cost exactly where it would be in order to purchase a machine that's already prepped.
*do you own the tools needed to do this type of work
*do you have the space to do this tear down/rebuild
*do you have the knowledge to dismantle a bike & know what your looking for.
*are you even going to be doing the work yourself, or watch & learn. you need to do it to know it IMO.
*if WATCHING, Is it fair to ask others to this much work for you? even friends. There is a lot of time that is involved to do this correctly.
Just food for thought, If you have lots of $$$ & time it is not a problem.
If your gonna need to depend on everyone else to get this off the ground running....well ball is in your court. your decision...
to me it sounds like your set on doing this, if that is the case please disregard this post, some of us have been down this road before and learned from it....we all need to learn to burn our cash somehow.
even if you buy to dismantle and sell, that is STILL a royal PITA and very time consuming, hence why the guy selling it, is ditching it... do you really want to buy someone else's problems?
like I stated before...Good Luck with whatever you do. Just trying to help..

And with spares.. alot less than you'll have into an SV.
Jackie,
you know I like you, but you have no garage, no place to have it all apart while you learn. Trust me a good way to go through friends is to leave your stuff all over their place. While I applaud your wanting to learn, I think many others have said it as good as it can be. In your current situation get a running bike and learn, not a roach to rebuild.
Doug
my brother is very knowledgeable about bikes. and if i decided i was going to get it we were going to do it together.
he has 3 garages... and one that is specifically for toys!
i understand everyones concerns and happy everyone is posting their opinions...
:-D its def helping me think from a few different angles
i wish i could just tell exactly whats wrong with it just by looking at it... for all i know it could be something simple like a fork shift bearing(what the seller mentioned)
or the engine could be f***ed
this is not a definite buy yet. as i want to see the bike first in person. little things will add up ie it the tires are shot... or brakes, or hell the engine looks like it got drop kicked
i just wanted opinions :-D and im glad im getting them
Shift fork bearing? The seller is either misinformed or BS'ing.
well IF it is something in the transmission, he should be able to start it and have it idle/run fine.

Not sure where you are at Jackie, I've followed this a little to be on the side of prepped is better...but make sure its been built properly. Thats the mistake I made, and I've built the bike up proper now.
2000 SV650S, with the common track/race fixins + some.
If you are still looking to buy, I'd be willing to talk with you more about what I've got into my SV and what you'd be willing to pay for it.
I'll also be at the TTD on August 9th if you wanna taker her out for a session!
Shoot me a PM.

Fuck it... buy the thing. You're buying a bike and a learning experience.
Worst case scenario, you start spending too much on it to get it back into working order.
At which point you'll either say "fuck it" and keep going or you sell it for a loss.
Sounds like your mind is made up anyway. Don't know why you even asked, really.
EDIT: Scratch that.... you didn't ask IF you should buy it... you asked what might be wrong with it.
In that case, tell these party poopers to shut their traps![]()

if it starts and runs it may just need a tranny....
For 1600 though I would pick up that orange 93 honda.

Bergs - I still don't care how she spends her money
But you're absolutely right though. Do I think it's the smartest and most cost effective option? No. But she didn't ask my opinion.
It sounds like she wants a project bike. Project bikes aren't usually cost effective. They're a learning experience. If I had the money, time, experience, etc to start an SV project bike, I'd look for something like this.
The question is.... is she ready for a project bike?

locked rear wheel could be as simple as a stuck caliper

Do you have any photos of it? You will be able to see the condition of the bike and from that, gauge it it has been looked after. Ask the seller for a few decnt pics via email, be specific on what you want to see.
For the money, I don't see how you can go wrong!!
I think it just needs some blinker fluid - the ecu knows that it is not safe to ride without working blinkers so it locks the rear wheel preventing any riding. It is a nifty safety feature!
i got recent photos,
it was stored in a heated garage
its very clean.
im talking with him for a meet up time right now via email...
right now i have him down to 500$
adn it has a clean title etc.
