    Front Brake Pad Swap

I got a set of Carbone Lorraine C59 Front Brake Pads for the SV.

I remember hearing that you should scuff up the rotors with sandpaper and then use brake cleaner. Is this correct?

If so, what grit sandpaper? My shop manual doesn't mention this step.

Also, for a track bike do you use the brake grease on the back of the pads?

    Thanks

    Re: Front Brake Pad Swap

What do you currently have on there?

Can't say I'm 100% positive, but from what I recall, it's only necessary when changing pad compound type. Ie, sintered to ceramic or vise versa.

Scuffing the rotors certainly won't hurt... but I wouldn't bother unless I had an issue.

I don't use anything on my pads.

If you are going to scuff, go with 600 and dont press hard and clean thoroughly with brake cleaner after.

    Re: Front Brake Pad Swap

I second the cleaning of the caliper/pistons.

All the crap that gets built up on them gets pushed back into the seals. It can cause the pistons to stick. I've had them stick on and drag and stick in an have way too much lever travel.

I found a tooth brush and fresh brake fluid and a clean rag works pretty good. I've had someone suggest a pair of pliers that grab the inside of the pistons to spin them so you can get all the way around but I have not tried it. I've also taken the pistons out and cleaned them but that was only because I was having an issue with them.

no way I would go that course.

I'm just gonna send my rotors to True Disk but its also cause I think one of them is slightly bent.

Hmmm, he recommends having your rotors sand blasted...my friend does have a sand blaster but I think I may just use emery cloth for now.

Definitely need to clean my calipers. Thanks.

I just give them a good scrub with red scotch bright to get the mung off them.

    Dish soap or purple power..

I know my pistons were not coming out evenly. What are the risks of removING the pistons completely to clean them other than air bubbles?

If you use air you risk shooting yourself in the face with a ricocheting piston. Lol.

Huh? I think you're under the impression that I am going to use compressed air to take the pistons out? What I mean is, if I pump the brakes to get the pistons off the calipers, other than introducing air into the system are there any other risk of damage etc that I will be facing?

    Re: Front Brake Pad Swap

you have to use compressed air.
as soon as the 1st piston pops up from pumping your lever, you lose all pressure in the lines. so you'll have to use a C-clamp to hold that piston back in place, and use compressed air to pop out the other pistons.

like he said, aim the calipers in a trash barrel, as they will shoot out quickly.

If youre going to do a real caliper clean, replace all seals ( lubricate new ones with brake fluid) and pilish the pistons to a chrome finish with a gentle polish.

Remove the calipers completely from the lines and clean them on a bench.
