    Fuel pump goes *wwweeeeeeee*

Seriously though, when I turn on my bike (02 RC) the fuel pump makes that sound, but doesn't stop. Anyone know why this is happening, and how on this glorious weekend we're faced with, I can fix it?
Sorry if it's a dumb/obvious question, but I'm new to the bike repair thing.
    Thanks!

Lemme get this straight: You turn the key on and can hear the fuel pump priming. But it doesn't stop? Even once you turn the bike over (actually start it)?

    re:

I didn't start it. Order of events: I turned it on, it sounded normal....rode to downtown, parked for a couple of hours, turned it on (didn't notice anything), rode home....about 15 miles total in traffic (no hard riding). Then I turned it off and went to open my garage door, when I came back to turn it on and ride it in to the garage, it did it. I didn't turn it over at that point because I didn't want to screw it up more. I had no idea what was wrong; I just pushed the piggy back in her pen. I went in this morning before work to see if stopped, and when I turned it on, it still did it. Still didn't turn it over though.

Check to see if it stops when ya turn it over and the bike is running. I'm surprised none of the RC owners here haven't chimed in yet...

My other question is have you had the fuel tank off (or propped up) recently?

    re:

Yes, those RC owners think they know it all. Lazy fools, they're probably still sleeping. Degsy and I were working on the bike over the winter because I crashed it last fall, and the whole body work was repainted, so it was definitely off. (Well, Degsy really worked on it, but let me tell you, I can hold a socket wrench in my hand at attention like nobody's business.) That's why I was concerned. He knows his stuff though, so I didn't really think that it was something on that end. That tank was a bastard to put back on though. I'll try starting it; thanks so much for the help.

another thought on this is are you getting fuel to thefeul injecter pump. maybe its not shutting off because there is no fuel getting in to the prime so it will keep running.
Are you sure you have enough fuel in the tank?

I did check the fuel levels, but I'm sure it wouldn't hurt to fill her up just in case. Thanks.

Go hit rc51.com technicals section. Those guys will know what is up. I had the opposite problem last year when one of the battery cables came loose. Good luck and if it is still going on when I get back I will try and help you with it.

I would check my manual but it is in the trailer behind a truck somewhere.

My inclination would be that you MAY have pinched SOMETHING putting the tank back on. It coulda taken a while to show it's head. You MAY have hit just the right bump, dip, turn, etc., triggering this awaiting beast...

    Bitch at Degs!

BTW-Was that the RC in his garage I dicked?

I'd agree on thinking something may be loose or pinched.

It's all water under the bridge, and we do enter the next round-robin. Am I wrong?

In addition to the pinched/popped off lines, it could be electrical. Check all the fuses. Take them out of the holder, look at them, and make sure they are seated. Hope this helps. Good Luck...

Thanks for all the help everyone, I appreciate it. I'll poke around this weekend and let you all know how it went.

Oops, sorry. I've been very busy lately and meant to call you. Yes, there is a chance that Jay is right here (the pinched fuel line theory).

I am not sure how the fuel prime relay knows when to switch off. It could be a pressure thing and it could be a timed thing. Open up the fuel fill cap and see if it stops and let us know.

    re:

Someone at work told me it was a pressure related thing. I'll try that this weekend as well. If it doesn't fix right away, I'll just twiddle with the connecting hoses on the tank.

    thanks degsy!

Sound like the pump shut off relay is not seing the right pressure. Kinked fuel line, clogged fuel screen, low fuel level, bad pressure switch, switch came disconnoected.....

These are the two things I'd look into, seeing as the bike was in pieces not too long ago...
