How high are the ceilings? If they 9' or better and you are working mainly in a single area, I'd recommend something like this, http://www.morelectricheating.com/de...FYl9OgodEHYASA
It will heat you and the stuff you are working on versus heating the air (which rises) which in turn heats you. We recommend IR heaters all the time as energy measures. And the one I linked is electric, you CAN get gas, but the installation is more. Installing them overhead makes them more convenient to work around.
I have the first type. I have an uninsulated 2 bay 2 story gambrel attached garage with second floor. It heats up very fast but gets too hot real quick. So I do the on off on off. But it's worth it till I get a gas wall unit.
Ummm, nope. I have everything closed and keep a CO detector with display on. It's never read over 0, except when an engine is run for a bit.

Interesting topic since I have a similar issue but not as bad. I have an attached garage which stays somewhat warm. What I mean by that is if its 0 degrees out, the inside of the garage will be in the high 30's usually around 38 mark. I've been looking for something to heat the garage to make it a little extra comfortable when working down there in the middle of the winter. Basically it needs to heat the equivelent of a 2 car garage area. Looking like electric is the way to go since it's enclosed and dont have a way to vent unless I open the garage door which I don't want to do.
Bumping this, what did the OP go with? I'm looking for something to use with little ventilation.
I've had the propane tank mounted setup shown below for ~10 years. Heated many sheds and single car garages with it and worked many hours next to it with zero trips to the hospital.
Thing can burn for 7hrs or longer on a full tank depending on how many burners I'm running and whether or not I'm on low, med or high.
Back when I was renting a duplex, the power was out for 6 days during an ice storm. I would help the landlord by heating the basement so the pipes wouldn't freeze then I would help myself by heating my half of the duplex.
It's a bad ass little set up, IMO.

A friend of mine went with the used oil fired forced hot air mobile home furnace plan. He mounted the unit outside of his shed and fed it with a 55 gallon drum. Probably not tha fanciest set up and may not (MOST LIKELY NOT) up to code but it was dirt cheap and worked flawlessly.
Not quite same application as OP but I had a Modine Hot Dawg heater installed by our furnace guy. It runs off the furnace heat so no external source is required other than the plumbing. Have it set to 40 degrees, if I want to work there I'll crank it up.
I sell both brands at my work. Schwank offers infrared heating available in gas or electric. Reznor offers an equal to the Modine Hot dog unit heater. PM me if you are interested.

Works great. Spend a bit extra. It's almost always worth it.

Plan is to put a small woodstove in my garage. Just bring coals up from the stove in the basement to the garage...instant fire. Boom.

Has anyone used one of the IR heaters? I am planning to work out in the garage over the winter, might be nice to warm the equipment and not just the air.

Any fuel burning heat source meeds air to support combustion. A wood stove creates a significant significant draft . Gasoline vapors are heavier than air and settle on the floor. Open thw door of a woodstove to add fuel and the draft draws a large volume of air into the stove. If enough vapors are present ........ not good. There are stoves that have the ability to draw air in from a duct to the outside, this is usually done for thermal efficiency and still does not do away with the risk from refueling the stove. In thw case of my friend who used the mobile hpme furnace, only the supply and return air was ducted to the shed. Combustion air comes from outside. My own garage is heated with a hot water unit heater. I'm not a heating expert and I'm not telling you you can't get away with a woodstove in a garage. I'm just pointing out the risk. Call your insurance company and ask them what an acceptable heat source is for a garage. I guarantee they dont say woodstove.
Sent from my phone. Please excuse the typos.
If insurance says no ill just bring the bikes into the basement.

They probably won't like that either. Lol. That being said, my wife's FZ6 will be spending the winter behind the couch.

How do you do that? Ductwork and a drier type vent to the outside and a wider sealed vent to the intake?

I'd be careful posting how the bikes will be stored. Doesn't take much for an insurance company to get all uppity about certain things such as bikes inside the dwelling.....something which I have always found amusing since their view is that 10g of gas is a no-no but 300g of heating oil is perfectly fine.
