Is there a Hawk Doc in the house?

The Patient: 22 y/o Total loss Race Hawk. Complains of intermittent starting/ can't stay running issues x 2 days

Vitals: 700 kit, stage 2 heads, jetted, Hiperform subframe, M4 exhaust

Patient states that has been in good health and "running great!" until a left sided lowside in the rain 2 days ago. Low speed lowside in turn 2 while practicing for upcoming race without known signifigant injury "just some scrapes and bruises"

"Flooded" initially but after sitting for a bit, "fired right up". Rested until race, started and warmed up ok, shut down, went to start again and wouldn't fire. Turned over but would not catch. Push starting yielded a start but would not stay running for race, entered 1 lap down, did 1 lap and quit.

Patient noted "seems to happen more when I lean left", Noted spike in RPM prior to quitting.

Exam: Patient appears well nourished, with an athletic build and younger than their stated age, in no apparent distress. Review of system reveals some abrasions noted on left side, Normal fuel delivery, Battery within normal limits and holding charge, all fuses intact. Positive spark to rear cylinder but apparent intermittent spark to front cylinder, Continuity of wires/ coil checked and are within normal limits although intermittent spark is found in the right plug. Spark unit is checked and is also within normal limits. Front coil is excised under local anestetic for examination. Will send to lab for further testing.

Assesment: Possible bad coil/wire/battery/regulator rectifier/short. Will consult with other more knowledgeable folks and narrow down these possiblities.

Plan: Will admit patient to garage and run complete diagnostic of all systems, starting with electrical. Will do a front coil transplant with known working coil to replace the excised one. Cannot rule out other causes.

Will ask for guidance from more knowledgable folks.

Are the pickups/etc on the left side of the engine?

Nope. Starter selenoid is... Front coil is behind the front tube and rear is behind the frame.

I am thinking maybe when I lean left something is touching and shorting out... but I can't confirm it.

Are you sure your battery is good and your charger is working it is TL right? Enought power to crank the bike? Why do you keep push starting?

Yes enough to crank, just won't stay running.

Is the front coil still fireing intermitently? Did you try another one? I knocked a lead off my rear coil last week.. Ran like shit till i found it?

If the bike has enough Batt to crank it has pleanty to run. I have run it to where it will not think of turning the starter and it ran for 20 min fine with a push start.

Leads were good... had been working fine. Have not tried another yet.

The thing is it won't even fire on just one cylinder...

I think your motor is bad, Ill trade ya for a good running stocker.

So you know it is getting spark, have you made sure your fuel pump is working well? Do you use a fuel filter? The intermitent spark on the front cylinder seems would lookl ike an electricsl issue excpet a hawk will run on 1 cylinder. So if the rear is good....

Why did Gino have to go to greece on a race weekned!

I don't think it is a fuel issue but I guess it could be a stuck float... Definately gonna check that.

I swear it is a spark issue... but I am not as good with electrical as I would like. We got spark out of a plug with the ignition on but not thumbing the starter... once... couldn't repeat it. Also one side of the coil didn't seem to be working.

did you try swapping the coil yet? I'm curious as to what will happen.

Highly doubt it's a stuck float... plugs looked normal and not like the bike was running lean... maybe a bit rich... but either way, there was no smell of fuel.
