can I haz a torque wrench?

Anyone have a torque wrench in/about the Boston area I can borrow tonight or tomorrow? It has to do 75 ft pounds, and 160 ft pounds. Please. I beg of you.

160 foot pounds wtf are you doing with that?!?

But yes I have what you need, they are in wayland though... if you want to roll out there and bring me with you i'll hook you up.

my 3/8" one will do the 75, my 1/2" one will do the 160 IIRC.

Re: can I haz a torque wrench?

I'm pretty sure my 1/2" guy goes up to 150 foot pounds.

You're going to be hard pressed to find one that goes higher unless you find a 3/4" drive...

For the trailer hitch I would probably just use a 1/2" drive breaker bar, find a point roughly 1 foot away from the fastener along the length of the bar with the bar horizontal, and stand on it. There's your 160 foot pounds... 1 foot times 160 pounds = 160 ftlbs

You probably cannot pull 160 lb/ft.

Just tighten it as much as you possibly can.

Thats my general approach, thus the lack of owning a torque wrench. I just figured this might be something that would be better to have the recommended approach to it. But maybe Ill just wing it like I do everything else. I mean, its not like my brake pads gonna fall out or something.

Then you need to stand roughly 1 foot, 1 and a quarter inches from the fastener

Re: can I haz a torque wrench?

About having a torque wrench in the long run its well worth it.
time = money and one stripped fastener is alot of time!

Its the fasteners with the low torque specs that require care.
Something like 160 ft/lbs is not going to suddenly strip on you.
You could break your tools though!

Re: can I haz a torque wrench?

id go with the air gun its gonna save you some guess work, set it at a reasonable torque and go to town.

also if you need more torque and dont have a torque wrench or the muscle might i suggest a 2 foot length of about 1.5 inch gas pipe from home depot put it on the end of your ratchet and voila you are now stronger thanks to leverage.

oh and when it comes to trailer hitches and the like i have never used torque wrenches or even ratchets get the right size wrench and interlock another wrench to add leverage and tighten it til you cant anymore. if you are unsure use it for awhile and re check. oh and lock tite is amazing!

Yah, Ill probably just throw some muscle into it, especially since no one has one thatll be the proper one anyway. Im sure itll be fine. Whats the worst that could happen? Right?

Check to see if your manual has the "German" specs, should say something about Goodentight.
