Question Help with brake caliper pistons

I need to rebuild the front calipers and a few of the pistons are stuck or seized in the calipers. Any suggestions on how to get them out without damaging the part of the caliper they are in. I am not worried about damaging the pistons as new ones are on order. I realize that if they are in-fact seized into the caliper there may already be damage done, but I am hoping that the pistons will come out without damaging the caliper. I thought about using compressed air to blow them out, but all i have is a tire pump, and that doesn't produce enough pressure to push them out. Any suggestions?

If you're not worried about the pistons, use a pair of needle-nosed vise grips and jiggle them loose, watching that you don't contact the calipers

Most use an air gun though.

Re: Help with brake caliper pistons

i spent many hours (about 9) working on 2 stuck pistons in the calipers on my car. basically spent a lot of time soaking with PB blaster, and using a mix of big screw drivers and channel locks to bang, push, and pull the pistons. if you can get them to move at all, then you aren't far from getting them out. don't be afraid to hammer them in a little, just to get them started moving

Re: Help with brake caliper pistons

I heard an old trick is to use a grease gun. Just hook it up to where the line goes (careful not to strip the threads) and pump away.

Make sure to place a board where the pads go, so when the pistons do come out, they don't fly across the room or fall on the floor.

    It is quite messy though.

Compressed air is with out a doubt the safest and easiest way to do it. Find some one with a compressor. If you use vise grips you can end up damaging the bore.
