    Help. R6 fueling issues

So, My R6 started running wonky at NYST. It occasionally seems down on power. It's at different revs, sometimes the bike is jerky. I thought bazzaz immediately. Ron had one I could swap and it did the same thing.

Today I dug in to see if there were any bad connections in the wiring for the bazzaz, but it all looked great.

One thing though, when I took the tank off, it does not hold fuel. Does this indicated a bad fuel pump on an FI bike? It is supposed to hold pressure, right?

No. Thats not a function of the fuel pump. That all depends on the connector type (some seal-some dont).
It could be fuel pressure though. If you get a momentary loss of fuel pressure, you could find injectors dry firing.

With your symptoms id be looking at electrical though. Something as simple as a not 100% good battery ground could play havoc with the bazzaz. Also check the engine ground wire. Has it got wet recently? Check the ecu doesnt have any water near it. Check plugs dont have any water in the plug recess. For that matter, change the plugs.

Are you getting any efi lights when it happens?

If it happens only at high fuel demand, check for a kink in the fuel hose or a blocked vent in the gas cap.

    Theres a start.

Gah! This sucks. I need the bike running for palmer next weekend. I really don't spend any time at low rpms, so I have no idea if it's an issue there. It is intermittent, but seems more and more frequent. Now that I think about it, this may have been happening from the start, but it is just getting bad enough to affect my riding now. It is unride-able at pace. dangerous to not know what you are getting when you open the gas.

    Re: Help. R6 fueling issues

I've been told to treat the coils on R6's as disposable.

Also, the semi-rigid feed line from the pump to the fuel rail can get kinked if not treated with care when moving the tank around, might be worth giving that an inspection for signs of kinks/bulges/etc?

My pump acts as a decent one way valve for fuel, but my return port doesn't, so it'll drip if I pop the lines off the tank and leave it oriented so the fuel is over them. I've also been told pumps can be suspect when looking for intermittent running issues on R6s, the $20 rebuild kits off eBay are easy to install.

I did talk to Al, he's sending me coils and an ECU to test.

I don't think the bike likes the purplish teal paint. It is protesting.

That's my guess sorry. But I do have good news for you. The fix is easy . It's one of two things. It's either electrical or mechanical boom done.

    Re: Help. R6 fueling issues

Honestly it's probably something easy the hard part is finding it. Start simple before you get nuts. Check every single plug and switch and grease it before you put it back so at least you know you already did it and it's done tight & right. Look for pinching and arc spotting. I had something similar happened to me only on left turns. It ended up being a lose term that held a fuse. I used a pic tool to tighten the connection and put grease on and never had a problem again. Before I figured it out I nearly rebuilt the bike. Start simple. Ohm it out too if possible.

Don't want to muddy Paul's thread - but not yet. I think it was just bad fuel. However, with the hours on my plugs, I think I will just do them as part of maintenance anyway.

I hear lots of bad about coils on the R6, a buddy had an odd running one, and shop replaced coils and hes been good since.

I've had two R6's that had coils go. Hadn't heard that was a common thing, glad it wasn't my own shit luck.

THey still seem to be considered a disposable item even on the newer bikes.

I thought this sort of electrical stuff was the domain of them eye-talian bikes. I thought Yamasakis were all 100% bullet proof.

    Re: Help. R6 fueling issues

I *think* I have this sorted. I found the Bazzaz harness was grounded to an engine lug that is powdercoated. I swapped it to the stock ground lug which is clean metal. I plugged the QS back in, and ran it in my neighborhood. No more random cutting out, and power is back. I don't have a place to test it under load, so I can't be sure, but all signs point to yessssss.
