Hey guys,
My brother just picked up a 99' FZR600 for $200. It was sitting in a garage for a undetermined amount of time until the beginning of the winter, where it was left outside.
It only has 5000 miles, but this poor thing has had a rough life.
We removed the airbox, changed the oil/filter, dropped in a new battery, lubed the pistons with some PB blaster, put it in gear and forced the motor to turn over. Disconnected the fuel line to the carbs and drained what I could, and drained the line coming to the fuel pump. I put in some fresh gas, seafoam, and some octane booster. I also removed the muffler, as the midpipe was dented all to hell.
Anyway, when I try to start it, it wants to catch. It will stumble and catch, then die. Usually with a spectacularly loud blast from the exhaust. There also appears to be some smoke, and sometimetimes popping coming out of the carbs when I'm cranking it over, not everytime, but...
Anyway. I don't know diddly about carbs. Why won't this damn thing start? I can smell gas coming out of the carbs... I did move the "vacuum slides" manually, and turn the throttle alot. Could I have flooded it? Fouled my plugs?
She wants to live again!!
I know I'm a new guy, any help would be appreciated.
Alex
pull the carbs and give them a good cleaning.
yeah clean the carbs and change the plugs
What Ryno said....................and put some ethanol approved stabil in the tank.

Alright, this is gonna sound retarded. How does one go about cleaning the carbs?
Just googled a bit, doesn't seem too bad. Thanks for the replies. I've been working on my own cars and bikes since I'm too cheap to pay people to do a half-assed job. I just haven't owned anything with this ancient technology called "carburetors"...

Sounds like its junk. I'll give you your $200 back, come drop the bike off!

I looking at all the posts to your problem starting your bike. I`m an old gearhead from way back and I`m thinking it might be an electrical issue. Do you have sufficiant spark to the plugs. Coil working right. Could it be a timing issue? For a few bucks a guy with the tools and know how can diagnose this correctly. Pay someone dude.
Spark seems good. In theory it could be a timing issue, but it has been sitting for a long time with some old gas in it. I'll try cleaning the carbs, because even if it is another issue, it would need to be done anyway. It also appears that FZR600s have a problem with cupping intake valves, which also could be the problem, but the bike only has 5000 miles...
just clean the carbs GOOD. I mean take them apart, needles, jets, everything. CLEAN them good, run a wire through them not just compressed air. Make sure everything is spotless. Then try and start it again, synch the carbs and you should be golden. IF and that's a big IF it still runs shitty then think about what else it could be.
drain the gas, drain the carbs, spray some starting fluid in the intake on the carbs while trying to start it, if it is a fuel issue it will start. If not look else where.
Maybe you should write yamaha a letter about the cupping valves and maybe you can get a recall on them. I hear the internet it the place for that sort of thing!!!
Ok that was a joke. Now get the carbs off and get them to a shop and have them cleaned by a prfessional.

If you'd rather not pay dealer prices to have those carbs serviced then PM me.
Lots of little soft metal pieces in there. Any damage renders them junk.....and keep the parts sorted for the individual carbs during disassembly. Check for any rips in the rubber components.....the list goes on...

I really appreciate all the replies. As soon as he gets some time, my brother will get the carbs off and we'll take a look.
Bergs, I may take you up on that offer.
Thanks again for all the responses.
Alex
Well, we got the carbs off...
Then we got mentally prepared to get our hands dirty, and break them down...
Unfortunately, the phillips heads screws were tightened down by Godzilla or Superman from the factory. Not wanting to strip em, or drill em' or work too hard before work, we finagled the float bowl drain bolts out, sprayed em out real good with carb cleaner, reinstalled em, and she fired up on the third try.
After priming the fuel pump for a while...
Now we need to fix the gigormous exhaust leak, anyone know a good exhaust shop in the Hadley, MA. area?
Thanks again guys!
I believe the float bowl screws are always loctited from the factory. Something about not leaking fuel onto a hot engine or something. Anyway, the best thing to do when you remove them the first time is to replace them with allen head bolts.
