    Klunk....

ok guys here to pick your brains. When i start accellerating i hear and feel a klunk that feels like it is coming from below me, can't tell if it is front, rear or directly below, it almost seems to move. I just had both tires changed, tightened the chain then had to tighten it again after 3 days, seems to be holding tight for now. seems louder if i am starting and accellerating around a corner. Sprockets look mint even though they have 18k miles on them and the chain looks alright but might it not be? the front sprocket actually look sbrand new, shiny and everything and all teeth are perfectly shaped and all there, rear is dirty (chain wax for 18k miles) but shape and none missing. I am out of ideas, what should i check next?

the chain maybe too tight...there should be a good amount of play.

how old is the chain? is it stretched?(you can tell by trying to pull it off the rear sprocket...if you can even a little..it needs to be replaced)

    Klunk....

when i tightened it the first time i left about 1/2 inch and 1/2 inch down for play but after 4 days it was all sloppy again so i tightened it more this time. 1/8th or so just to see if it would loosen again and it is holding tight, i am going to loosen it again a bit after work. the chain has 18k miles on it but looks alright, it dosen;t skip over the sprockets (as far as i can tell). would it clunk if the chain is worn?

as far as cush drive, Keith just did the tires and we didn;t take the rear sprocket off and he said something about that i'm not sure what a cush drive is, he would be better to ask

fair enough, and the clunk happens when there is tons of slop in the chain and when it is too tight, i will loosen it again when i get home but it did it when there was way more than even 1 1/4 of play

I had what sounds like something similar. It sounded like skipping just after the clutch engaged. Happened mostly when the bike was under load, like when starting from a stop on a hill.

Turned out to be that the chain was too tight. (according to Peter at G.M.D. Computrack Boston)

if not more...sounds liek it's time for a new chain...

do the test i mentioned to verify

fwiw - it is really bad to over tighten a chain...much worse then it being too loose...

Thanks, i'll loosen it and se4e if it helps, btu it seems the same whether loose or tight. And i know it is realy bad to overtighten, i thought of that after i did it, thats why i am going home to loosen it. guess it is time for a new chain from the sounds of it though. Maybe i'll re-gear and lose some of that gas mileage i am so happy about

If the clunk only happens when the chain is very loose, it's likely slapping the underside of your swingarm under acceleration.

Is your axle slipping and slamming forward because you are not torquing it enough to hold it in place? Or is the chain gaining slack without any movement of the axle moving forward? There should be no space between the axle carrier and the stops(adjusters) when you torque the axle bolt. You are using a torque wrench right?

check your brakes, make sure all your calipers are secure, and no movements are bound up

believe me, from experience, you don't want a caliper to fly off into your wheel

    yea, get a new chain...

you're experiencing what I've heard called the "death stretch"

you can tighten it and tighten it all you want, it will keep stretching quickly until it fails.

    get a new chain asap
