    KTM 250 Gear Oil

Okay, I'm sure there's a 36-page thread on 2 stroke trans oil here somewhere, but I can't find one.

What do you all recommend/use? Manual for the '06 250 XC-W calls for Motorex 4T 15W40, but I guess a lot of people are running ATF, Silkolene, Rotella 14W40...

Kind of new to the 2 stroke world but it sounds like you can get away with running a lot of oil types, so long as you change it very frequently? Right now I'm leaning towards the manu recommended Motorex but then maybe try some other stuff and just change it every ride?

It's just a tranny. It's not picky. Start with recommended oil. Change every couple of years. LOL

I'm playing the lazy card, 'Pro Honda HP Transmission Oil' in my smokers, 'cause it's easy to get locally. When I changed it at 10 hours (Mfg suggested interval for racing) on the sumo it came out looking new.

twice a season with Amsoil 10W40 Dirt Syn here ... used to use Spectro Clutch Saver (10W30) as well.

some of my bikes did not like Motorex syn, clutch slip and noise. weird.

Well the only consistent thing I've seen is... wait nope nothing consistent. Seen so many threads about how you just have to change it after every ride, etc etc. Maybe if you're racing the life out of it?

Super helpful to hear your replies though, thanks. Good to have options. Prob start with fresh Motorex since it's the spec oil, but if I can't find it locally I have some others to check for!

KTM 250 Gear Oil-429277-jpg I use it in everything from a TZ250, KTM 200 XCW, Montesa HRC , YZF250, Toyota, Toro lawnmower, Yamaha generator, and even a Ford F350 diesel and various cars. No friction inhibitors so it works perfect with wet clutches. I even throw it in the chain saw chain luber. Simple is better than a different oil for everything with pretty pictures on the fancy bottle.

Decided to throw some Rotella T4 15/40 in there and put some Motorex on order so I can try them both out. $15/gal for the T4 vs $50/gal for the Motorex

I used the T4 for years. Worked great. The only reason I switched to T6 5-40 was I bought a diesel truck and it starts easier (need it plugged in to 110V too) with the T6 in the minus -0 temperatures. And so I just bought T6 for everything after getting the diesel just to have only one oil hanging around. T4 is gonna work fine for you.
