Believe it or not, I think Home Depot has the best deal on Torque Wrenches (and I'm one of those guys who shops around a lot first). They carry Husky brand torque wrenches and they're incredibly well made.

I have both, the 1/2" and the 3/8" for different ranges. The 1/2" is $80 and the 3/8" is $75.

I use a 1/4, 3/8 and a 1/2 drive. For something like a sparkplug at 14 ft/lbs I will use the 1/4 at 168 in/lbs for better accuracy. The 1/4 is a SK and the 3/8 is a Craftsman digital and the 1/2 is a chinese no name.

Can we add a poll to the poll? What is the most useful drive size?

probably get a 3/8" if you want only one. Can always use an adaptor if needed. I'd only get a 1/2" drive if you are working on trucks all day

Ya I believe if you use an adaptor that is straight (along same axis) it is fine, ti won't change the moment on the arm.

Never use a 25$ torque wrench on anything with a 1/4 drive...you'll thank me later, just trust me.

I have 2 Crafsman 3/8" and 1/2 inch for personal.
I lent out my beam scale to FemmeKat, but I guess she didn't like it.

Extension won't skew reading if attached 90* to head. But if extends/reduces overall length, then you're right.

Anyone ever get theirs calibrated? Just because you set it and it clicks doesn't mean it's the right torque

I think he means that the extension will have some twisting (torque) flex inherent in the extra length, this is what can skew your reading, especially at higher torques.

Re: In light of a recent thread... torque wrenches

I use a CDI 0-50 ft lb dial torque wrench (3/8 drive) for the smaller stuff and a Snap-On 30-150 ft lb 91/2 inch drive) ratchet for the larger stuff.

Same company and great to work with over the phone in regards to questions and recalibration.
