    local ultrasonic cleaner

just picked up a hawk and i've gone thru the carbs but the outsides are still filthy. wondering if anyone local had an ultrasonic cleaner and how much $$ it'd be, or if they know of anyone who does it. Called harry's machine and they'll only do it if the bikes being worked in, part of a jet kit install or something.

also curious if ultrasonic cleaners are safe for the shaft seals and such?

    thnx

So this will be the third time I'm cleaning these carbs (due to other issues) and this little blaster has worked awesome each time. This past time there was rust in the tank and the powder got everywhere in the carbs..

I did some initial cleaning by hand, because I didn't have a chance to get everything out to blast (mostly using a dremel brass brush):

what I should have done is just waited. this was like literally 3 minutes of blasting and less than 50 cents of soda.

We have a bead plastic with polycarbonate media at work. Have to see how it does on this type of project.

    Re: local ultrasonic cleaner

Wifey gave me an HF ultrasonic cleaner for xmas. For the money, I think it is the balls. I've been putting bits of my CB400 through it one bolt or fixture at a time. I'm sure the pros get better results with the big-boy toys. But I'm pretty happy with the results so far.

Soon I'll be investing in rebuild kits for the carbs and passing them through the cleaner.

    Re: local ultrasonic cleaner

So far my favorite is dish soap or simple green. Someone bought me some of the HF branded solution. I have no idea what it is. (Which kind of bothers me.) It works pretty well too but discolors aluminum. I used it on my brake caliper the other day and am of mixed opinion on the results.

Another neat trick I picked up from the interwebz is soaking chrome in oxalic acid. I am using a product called Bar Keepers Friend. I hear wood bleach is a higher/better dose of the stuff, but the cleaner is working well on my chrome. I had planned on wire wheeling some of the chrome and painting it on the CB400 (for a change of pace as much as anything). But the stuff is really brightening up such that I am having 2nd thoughts there.

    Re: local ultrasonic cleaner

enrichment circuit is clogged on mine on one carb. I've been at it with cleaner, compressed air, and wire for 2 nights now and can't get it clean enough that i can blow thru it with lung power. i PM'd iglu but would also be interested if anyone had any advice to clean this circuit or if ultrasonic cleaners would get in such a small non-removable orafice (.01"-.015") and had access to one.

I work in hopkinton so not too far at all. cost/turnaround? Should I PM you? or i can email (morgan.ga(at)gmail.com)....

i'm not interested in splitting the carbs or dealing with the butterfly rubbers so nothing that would harm them. but otherwise the carbs are dismantled.

I may try another shot at it tonight and see how it goes or let it soak in something one more overnight

+1 on the HF Ultrasonic. I have a sandblaster but it's full of aluminum oxide. I like the idea of letting things soak. My cleaner arrives today and my CX500 carbs will be going in for a bath.
