Actually, ya know what bro? if you wanna teach me how to do that shit, i'd gladly be a student... my carbs haven't been synched once in the last 10k & probably have't been synched since new. Same w/ the valves... i gotta check them soon, too... like 3k miles ago i'm sure i could do it on my own no problem, but it's more fun wrenchin w/ a buddy & a beer

believe it or not, if you generally know how to do something, you learn how to do it even BETTER if you teach someone & talk them through it. that's worked for me time & time again & one of the reasons why i like talking about technique, maintanance & riding to new riders... it's not cuz I think i'm a know-it-all, but because through talking about something & possibly teaching someone, you learn more about it cuz you're thinking it through & rationalizing things step by step.

Carb syncs are no problem, takes all of 20 minutes to do and that includes removing the fuel tank and airbox and letting the bike warm up to operating temperature. The actual sync takes less than five minute, some people use external fuel reservoirs but I just take the tank off and sync them before the float bowls empty out, works like a charm (though I suppose this might be an issue for FI bikes). If you're in the neighborhood stop by and we'll synch your carbs, would be worth shimming your needles up a hair too, I think you'd be very happy with how the midrange feels with slightly lifted needles.

Valves are a two day job unless you're really good (and the parts store is close by and open and has shims), and they can easily turn into a weeklong project if you break something and need a part, and you're deep enough into the bike where that's always a distinct possibility.

Brakes are straightforward too, whether it's pads rotors lines bleeding or any combination of the four it's just bolt off bolt on bleed and go. For rotors you have to remove the front rim, lines it's usually easier to remove the front bodywork though most of the time you can get away without this step if the front is hard to remove.

    Maintanence Day For NEWBIES?

Just noticed that this was scheduled for Sat the 9th. Ive got to pull out - I'm in Montreal that weekend as my father in law is not well. (And actually saturdays don't work for me anyhow).

On a side note, Ive thought a lot about this do it yourself maintenance stuff and I think its great. Saves money, you can find and fix things, its gratifying.....BUT as pete (oreo) can attest to after seeing my try to replace a light bulb at the track I just don't know crap. Even this basic course would probably be too much for me. Im the guy who pays the dealership for every little thing.

On a second side note...the track was freakin' wicked on Tuesday.

(Trying to get it all in one on post lest I become a post whore)

Sure, I can help you. You could probably figure out how they go on yourself in the 40 minutes it would take to drive here, but I do have a few tools that make the job easier, like torque wrenches and vacuum bleeders.

You'd need the line kit (which should include two lines, two single banjo bolts, a double banjo bolt, and several crush washers) and a pint or two of brake fluid. Normally I'd say bring beer but since you're underage just bring some kool-aid and we'll spike it with whatever's left of the brake fluid

Manny, you can do it. It's just a matter of going slow and figuring out how a very simple idea (e.x. 'fire") is translated into 3-demsional reality (spark plug). Under good supervision (my dad) I was able to help him replace and entire engine in car one summer (I never would have been able to do this on my own). And, if you saw my post from a few days ago, it took me a really, really long time to replace the lightbulb on my bike. Point I'm trying to make, is that if you have a good teacher to show you the way, you can do almost anything...even change a light bulb.

    a side note about lightbulbs...

Q: How many OreoGab's does it take to change a lightbulb?

A: Ten. 1 to hold it, and 9 to drink till the room starts spinning.

how long does it take Chris Sedition to replace a light bulb?

trick question, he can't... he just stands there holding the bulb in the socket waiting for the world to revolve around him.

If we can do this in the morning, I'm game. I was supposed to spend the day at the track with my cousins, but this would be worth it to miss half the day. I assume you're real close to the track anyways...I'll just leave your place and go there afterwards. What time were you thinking?
