    Milky white sight glass

I have a 02 gsxr 600. Started it for the first time this yr. After running it for a min I shut it off to check the oil level and found white oil on the inside of the glass. The cap wasn't white. Also noticed after sitting the oil level went up from low to half. condensation? Or do I have a major issue here? Coolant in oil?

Probably didn't run it long enough to evaporate the condensation that naturally forms as the oil/ engine comes up to temp.

Did it sit outside in the -100 temps all winter? If not, then I doubt it's coolant in the case.

Let it come up to temp and then take it for a 10-15 minute ride and look at the glass. When was the last oil change? She's probably game for an oil change just the same, after storage.

Thanks for the tips. It sat in the freezing garage all winter. Took it down the street. Just got back and waiting. Still no white so I think it should be ok. Happened to my dirtbike before but this was a bit different. If I had coolant in the oil, would the white come back quick?

    Re: Milky white sight glass

thats a tricky one. check your coolant level, and what do you have in there for coolant?

i say drain the oil, see how milky it is. if its completely milky you might have popped a freeze plug in the head on something

Spray in some whipped cream, add a cherry and a straw and enjoy your shake.

The coolant is a bit above full in the overflow and the radiator is almost full.

ya change the oil. Its actually antifreeze coolant in there right? not something that could have froze?

Had the valve cover off today. The freeze plugs were all in their place, well I didnt look for any issues while changing the valve cover gasket. Nothing floating around in there. Hope I'm just over thinking it.

if thats the case swap out the oil and ride her a bit. probably just a lot of moisture build up from winter.

Yes it's coolant in there. Had the water wetter drained and put in coolant before winter.

You most likely are, coolant levels are good then it was most likely condensation. Give it some fresh oil and maybe add a little less.

just moisture. Very common. Even in fresh oil if you have a few temp changes in a week of sitting.

I guarantee it does the same thing. Any engine that contains oil creates considerable condensation during warm up, even in the summer.

The oil level issue going from low to half is because there is still oil within the engine that hasn't drained down into the pan after the engine was running. With oil that is not up to temp it could take as long as 5 minutes for it all to drain back down into the pan.

This is a classic case of "Ride more. Worry less."

Just drained the oil. Gonna see tomorrow if there is water in it. If the water rises to the top.

You CAN check all that stuff, but it's just a normal phenomenon as others have said. Ride it longer then check the site glass.
