Note to self.. don't do that again

My new ZX-10R specs that you torque the oil filter to 23 ft/lbs on installation. Well... I did that during the last oil change.

Today I changed the oil and filter(did some drilling and lockwiring while I was in there too). The sucker was stuck on there so good that the oil filter socket dented the flats on the filter(effectively stripping it) when I tried to take it off. I had to drill a hole through the oil filter and turn the filter with a metal rod stuck through it to get it to move.

I decided to go with about 1/2 the torque spec this time(12 ft/lbs) and I'll be watching it. I thought it was a bit overkill when I put it on the last time, so this was pretty much a confirmation... yah... it was overkill. Don't do that again, you bozo.

My calibrated hands tighten it just right every time. Never need a wrench to take it off and it never leaks.

Make sure to oil the gasket before you install the filter!

    Spin on till snug.
turn another 1/2 turn by hand.
1 dollar hose clamp & safety wire (optional)

You'll never have a problem again.

I mean to fill the filter with oil before spinning it on.
Just that much less time that it takes to build oil pressure when you start it back up.

Yeah, every time I've torqued the filter onto my bike, it ends up taking a large screwdriver driven through the side of the filter and a prybar to get it off. And this is with the o-ring oiled and a light coat of anti-sieze on the filter threads.

That sucks! I'd expect it would be something more like 23 in/lb, because 23 ft/lb is a ton for a filter! I always just do it by hand. Oil the o-ring, then spin it on by hand, then 1/2-3/4 of a turn more by hand. And I've even had problems getting filters off in the past even using this method - i can't imagine torquing it that much!

Yup, it says Ft/lbs in the manual. Probably a translation issue from Japanese to American.

I should have listened to that little voice that said "that's crazy" its way too much. The funny thing is there was NO other info about it anywhere I could find. Usually there is installation info on the filter itself too. Spin onuntil contact then turn so much afterward.

I learned my lesson. We'll see how it goes next spring.

For the 12R it says 19ft/lbs which is still way too much. I had to use channel locks to get the original filter off.

The tightness you can muster by screwing it down with your hands is plenty, unless you are a girly man.

Suzuki does the same thing in their factory service manual.

I don't listen to it, that is wrong and it is obvious.

23ft/lbs is WAY to much for an oil filter. Hell, the cylinder head bolts on mine are only 25ft/lbs.

Hand tight. I keep a torque wrench around for the big ticket items where it really matters. Use common sense, and a seat-of-the-pants feeling for everything else.
