    reviving a 27yr old bike

my brother in law has a 1983 GPZ550 that he has had in storage since 1985/86.
it only has 2500 miles on it. (CORRECTION: at the time of posting the bike was not in my posession actual milage around 9700miles)
he has asked me to get it going again for him.
the following is a list of what I can think of that sholud be done. (is there anything I missed that should also be done?)

    New battery
    New oil/filter
    drain coolant and replace
    brake lines
    tires
    brake pads
    brake fluid
    rebuild carbs
    clean tank / petcock
    new fuel filter
    clean replace air filter
throttle cable (I will more than likely replace this)
    new plugs
    fork seals
Check the following (replace as needed)
    valve stems (replace)
    spark plugs wires and boots
    coils
    cable boots

    am i overlooking anything?
I need to get him a price list for parts so he can decide if he wants me to start this project.

thanks 6 fingered, that is not a bad idea at all.
i was wondering if I should turn it over by hand a little before cranking it with the starter.
not really sure if i need to or not?

Inspect very closely any and all rubber parts such as tires, valve stems, carb boots, cable boots, suspension seals and bumpers, caliper seals, etc.. Check coils and plug wires for cracks and corrosion.

Chain might have to be cleaned or replaced. Sprockets should still be good though.

    Ted,
if he decides not to get it going again, it may be for sale, I have to look it over and give him a price list of what it needs. then he will decide.
I will post it up on NESR if he in fact does decide to sell it. You'll have first dibbs if you want

Re: reviving a 27yr old bike

The reality of it is, i have taken bikes from the 60's and 70's and rode them with all the original rubber bits, running gear, seals, except tires. If you replace everything you "should" you will spend more than it is worth.

Re: reviving a 27yr old bike

    6fingered
I would have to agree with your statement.
I will be doing all the work myself for free, I love doing this type of thing.
so that should save him a lot of money, he would just have to pay for the necessary parts. I will more than likely replace everything that needs to be in order to make it a safe/reliable bike for him. I am pretty sure not everything will have to be done, but I will check everything. I was just trying to get a complete list of everything that I should check/replace if needed.
    Thanks everyone for your help.

    Definitely let me know.
That was my first bike and I'd love to have one with those low miles and hopefully no or limited rust.

    Save some money:

Skip the coolant change, you'll sort out why...
    Brake pads should be fine
Just clean the carbs, they may not need a rebuild
    Throttle cable should be fine
    Plugs should be fine
Boots and wires should be fine
    Coils should be fine

    Additionally:

Lube the swing arm and steering head gearings

Re: reviving a 27yr old bike

i agree with Stoinky. Most things should be looked at, but most likely will not need replacing.
If it hasnt had much fuel in it, there could be corrosion in the tank...
Some high grit sandpaper over the rotors wouldnt hurt if theyre corroded.
You can look in the radiator cap and see if theres rust, also if there hasnt been much coolant in it, may need a new one if there are blocked crosslines

No need, they came with lifetime coolant.

I did the same thing with an 81 GS650. Got about $2800 into it plus the 200 bike cost. Got it to the piont of running and found the tranny was busted. It's nice working on stuff but i'm way over what it's worth. My list is even longer than yours and i'm not done yet. 4years total time spent so far.

Re: reviving a 27yr old bike

i suggest doing as little as possible to actually GET it running.. then put around the neighborhood for a few days to check the mechanical bits. trans, brakes etc.. after sitting the calipers prob need a teardown and reseal so they dont stick.. definitely flush the brake system.. CLEAN THE TANK because even if you CAN'T get it running, the bike will always catch a better price with a rust free tank.. do the esentials to get her running.. oil, filters (oil, air and fuel), if its carbed CLEAN the carbs first.. if it runs after THEN rebuild them to get the best out of em. then once youve verified shes all in working order do the other things.... tires, brake pads etc etc etc... i just restored an 83 GPZ 1100 fuely for a customer and the tab was nearly $4500.. he went to the extreme and could take that bike to a concourse show.. no need to do that.. get her running and enjoy it, it will only be a matter of time til he'll want something newer and faster so dont get too tied up in putting too much money into her. if you need any help or guidance in fixing her, let me know, i'd be glad to help you out.. NOXIN can verify my vintage bike skillz.. i got his KZ 1k running PERFECT for him.

Landric, where does the Fuelie ECU hide on that GPZ? I've got one that's been converted to Mikuni flatslides, I have the fuel rail/throttle bodies/etc but I can't find where the massive plug goes to in the wiring harness, and I can't find where anything's been cut out?

Sell it, find something running cheap. Why put $ in a $500 bike?
