    Oil Cooler delete SV650

I have a 2006 SV650 that is track only and have heard of some people removing the oil cooler, I would like to do this as well for the weight and looks, also it would be one less thing to break. Has anybody here done this without issue? Removing it and putting two bolts with crush washers in its place would be easy, but I have also read that you also need to remove the oil jet behind the oil filter, but there wasn’t much more detail given.

That is a large part of your cooling system... removing seems unwise.

When thinking about weight savings with the bike. Start with your body. Plus that seems like a BIG PITA for what maybe pound or 2.

You still need a gazinta and a cumzata there, so you might as well have a radiator between the two.
    Looks schmooks.

It may seem unwise, but since the gen1 motors don’t have coolers, it makes you wonder why they were put on. Surely FI doesn’t heat the motor anymore than the carbs

Maybe the engineers at Suzuki decided to add a cooler because it was warranted. Cooling your engine oil, Sounds like a good idea to me.. Not something I would remove. Matter of fact I believe most riders add coolers to there bikes if possible! But hey its your bike. Good luck.

The biggest issue with engines is Heat and dispersing it. Why would you take something off that helps with this?
And on track specific machines its even a bigger problem as your running at high RPMs for along time. Manufactures add coolers for a reason.

It's like, 2lbs.... at axle height...

But I mean, you can, I guess... But you very well could be risking motor longevity for virtually no benefit.

A little googling showed a bunch of people who didn't know anything for certain making wild speculations... some said "sure, no problem, it's totally fine but I can't prove it" and others said "hell no, don't do it, it's totally not okay but I can't prove it."

    So.... why bother?

I am... but now I'm pretty sure it's holding me back. TWELVES HERE I COME!!!

In all seriousness, I'm all for weight shedding and getting rid of unnecessary stuff... This one requires more research to verify whether or not it's just there for those 110 degree days in traffic and if it's totally fine to ditch it for track riding.

You make a valid point. I’ll keep it and just keep an eye out at the track for anyone that is doing it.

Well, this marks season 9 or 10 racing my '06 SV and this is the first I've ever even heard of it.... I don't think you'll see anyone doing it.

That doesn't mean it shouldn't be done, tho.

    Re: Oil Cooler delete SV650

This has been talked about a little on the svrider forum but Pete summed it up. Some have tried it with no bad consequences but of short duration. Some have compared it to the first gens that don’t have them. And it’s been stated that if Mr. Suzuki engineered it for the SV then there must be a legitimate reason to have it. No one is jumping on the band wagon and really trying it out.

I think we need someone to be the guinea pig and to try it for the summer and report back.

I for one knows that with or without it ain’t gonna be dropping my laps enough to stay insight of #81.

Just shervin it up and drill some holes in it.

Will make it lighter and still retain functionality.

Ha I completely forgot about that.

But yes, I don't think many people would ditch the oil cooler. Only thing I got rid of was the fans.

How much do you want to find out?

Buy two appropriately sized banjo bolts with a the head drilled and tapped, one for where the send line goes into the cooler, the other for where the return line leaves the cooler:
    Oil Cooler delete SV650-banjo-jpg

Install a thermocouple into each banjo bolt and wire to a 2 channel digital thermometer and go out and ride.
Here is one that will do Min/Max/Avg/Dif for the duration you're monitoring. Do this and you'll be able to answer the question "is my oil cooler doing anything meaningful?" Anything other than that and you're pretty much just guessing.

Or do what everyone else said and don't bother because it's really not going to make a difference.

just a fwiw, my 1st gen SV that apparently has no oil cooler, in over 150,000 miles, I can count on one hand and have 2 fingers left over, how many time my cooling fan came on, and even 15 years later, I can tell you exactly where I was each time (they wera all in barely moving or stopped traffic), not sure why the FI SV needs to be cooled more than the carb model, not only does it have an oil cooler, it also had a bigger coolant radiator..... sounds excessive to me

Slightly more power out of same CC's = slightly more heat.
FI over carbs generally = can run a leaner mixture = slightly more heat.

    That's in theory, anyway.

Yeah but you let that oil get hot and it gets real thin, less resistance...

True. That's why I like to put my oil in a big pot and let it simmer at a low boil for a few hours on the stove before I put it in the bike.

Gets the kitchen a little smokey, but it's great for my skin.

I get that, how many 1st gen SVs have been tuned to run higher HP than 2nd gen, without overheating ? I still think it's excessive, they are cooled well enuf to run regular gas instead of premium

    Re: Oil Cooler delete SV650

Great question.... Another great question would be, how many 1st gen SV's have been turned to run higher HP than 2nd gen and then had a larger or even SECOND radiator installed?

Cuz I've seen quite a few.

I'm not saying they need MORE cooling, but I'm also not saying they need LESS, cuz I'm not all that convinced either way. I'm just saying I've seen a LOT of anecdotal, but very little empirical evidence, pointing to both sides of the argument - both in the street environment and the track.

Thing thing about heat and oil is that excessive heat is very rarely a killer so long as you change fluids regularly...

I am jumping on this "I have never heard of this bandwagon" too and I have a 2003 SV. Of course I still have my whale tail and stock can so maybe I just wouldn't know.

Only thing oil related that I know of is that you can blow your engine on the Gen1 (at least) by does those wheelie things too much (oil starvation). My ex did it and apparently it was common back then. So listen up you squids!
