    oil now or Spring?

You guys are funny.. stoinky is probably the person here most likely to keep a bike for a long time.

I have yet to see any scientific evidence that you should change the oil before winterizing and again in the spring.

    - None of the manufacturers say to do it. They know a bit about the engine
    - Changing your oil and not even using it wastes your money and creates more environmental waste
    - We are already changing our oil more often then recommended.

e.x. Honda says I only need to change the oil every 8k miles with dino oil. I'm using synthetic and changing at 4k mile intervals, the oil in my bike as I put it away is only 2000 miles old, it is not going to break down the engine sitting for 2 months.

    - All fluid breakdown, etc.. occurs more slowly in the freezing temps we have. Issues like stabilizing your gas are actually more important in a bike that is being stored in the summer.

I have been thinking about this with my car too. My car has been getting a change every 3000-3500 miles. Honda says it is good for more like 10,000 miles. Considering the cost savings, waste savings, and the fact that they are signing off on the ability of the engine to run on that maintenance schedule it is very tempting to follow their advice.

All I am doing is the same thing I do every year, stabilize the fuel (I ride through the winter but way less often), and keep the bike on a battery tender. (Which it gets kept on year round anyway)

Actually the owners manual on the SV says to fill the crankcase to the brim with fresh oil for winter storage and drain it in the spring along with fogging the cylinders, stabilizer in the gas and so on.

Will I do this ... nah, I will take my bike off the battery tender on nice sunny warm winter days and go for a short ride just to remind me what I am missing.

I got 200 miles on this oil change and before I start riding this spring, I will drain and put good ole Rotella in there without changing the filter cause there is no wear in that filter.

Stoinky made some good points that I never even considered like using full blend synthetic ... mobile1 ??? ... in all his engines, snowblower, lawn mower ...

I cannot argue with his reasoning!

It is a bit more money but I can see a return on that money ... I have paid my share of engine rebuilds due to oil related problems.

hey--I just told you guys WHY + HOW to change your oil for WINTER STORAGE!!!!

wether you agree or disagree --- doesn't matter!
you can do it or don't---still doesn't matter!

the reason I stated before IS the reason to do it! this is not my own made up reason! IT IS A FACT --- A FACT CONCLUDED BY SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH BY AUTOMOTIVE ENGINEERS!

    that is all

    gotta add 1 more

were all concerned about the break down during storage but how is the oil affected any differently than it would be just sitting in a new quart bottle??Are the new bottles sealed enough not to let oxygen to get in?? hmmmm
THe main reason i'm beatin this thread one more time is I heard that most synthetic oils have a chemical package in them that will eat away at new seals from the inside of the engine unless the engine has had time to be broken in and coated with dino juices,,, Is there any truth to this or do you think its complete Bull shit?? THanks

Synthetic oil does not break down the seals in a new engine.

    easy oil change

bring engine up to normal temp and turn off
    remove filter
drain old oil until it drips out (drop at a time)
install new filter (clean and oil gasket)
    add oil, check level
start engine and run for 10sec or so
wait a min or 2 and recheck level

This is much better than my "hole saw and a tig welder" method. I'll have to try it out...

    oil now or Spring?

I just use a come-along attached to the ceiling of my garage and flip the bike upside down with the fill cap off.
