    Ongoing, Recurring clutch engagement/starting problem

    Hey Guys,

I'm hoping to get some insight regarding my trackbike ('06 GSX-R 750), that I've been having some recurring clutch/starting trouble with. Early last year the bike was giving me some frequent problems:
    - when trying to start, with the clutch all the way in, cranking the starter would make the bike lurch forward significantly (clearly the clutch wasn't disengaging and the starter was pushing it forward). To get it to start, I would let jam the bike forward several times (basically trying to push it forward while in gear) and then would try to start it as usual again. This seemed to free up the clutch and it would usually start.

At some point last season I had the clutch replaced with a factory clutch--the mechanic said that the old one was stuck together--I don't wholly understand the concept, but there was reference to having to whack it with a hammer to separate it.

The clutch seemed to work fine for the two track days that I did thereafter, but lo-and behold, the first time I hit the starter this year the thing starts trying to take off like it's in gear again (yes, the clutch was all the way in).

Anyone have any ideas/insights? It has two TTD's since the clutch was replaced, so the miles/hours are very low. Is this a problem anyone has ever heard of? Thanks in advance--I'm at a loss and would prefer not to replace the clutch again without finding what is causing the problem from happening in the first place.

What kind of oil are you using?

Probably just need to adjust your clutch cable a bit so it releases all the way when you pull the clutch.

I'd have to check to be certain, but as I recall it's a large-brand 10w-30.

But if this were the case (and the cable were not correctly adjusted), wouldn't it also exhibit problems when riding? I should have mentioned that in the post, but once it's started and running, it runs/rides/acts perfectly normal.

I had this issue with my FJR. The factory shipped them with a lube grease on the plates, made them stick on start up and sticky shifting. I pulled the plate pack, cleaned them, then soaked them in synth oil. Ran fine afterwards. Not saying that is your exact issue here, but as Degsy is alluding to, if you have something funky with your oil, you might be getting sticky plates.

Do you have trouble finding neutral?

You may have a notched clutch basket and the plates are hanging up... or

    What leavers are on it?
Clutch adjustment may and sounds way off....as all the slack is at the top of the leaver

Oil in it? but really isn't showing any symptoms of Full synthetic slip...

I would say Adjustment is way off........

Notched baskets was my guess too. But then that is probably because I just had and resolved that issue myself.
When you have a hammer in your hand, everything looks like a nail.

Thanks for the quick responses guys.

I'll have to look in to adjusting the clutch, and I guess if not; the basket.

Adjust it on the enging case and then the leaver and leave a good amount of slack as the 06-07 have a slipper clutch and like the play..if not you will prematurly wear in the clutch and it will slip eventually...

and he prob used some of the old plates that may have bad wear or issues.... they shouldn't need a hammer to seperate ever
