Paint: Rattle-can match?

    Paint: Rattle-can match?

Whenever I paint something with a rattle-can, I always put a clear coat over it. Acrylic-Lacquer normally. Buffs out nice.

The thing is, is if I use it over a black paint... say DupliColor Automotive Acrylic-Lacquer.... It almost dulls the black to a grayish/yellowish tinge in the clear-coat, rather than a crystal clear like, say a factory paint job.

It's really hard to describe without seeing it in person... and black is super hard to match (almost harder then red) when it comes to manufacturer/paint company.

Has anyone had any good luck with off-the-shelf paint? I'm just hoping I'm using a crappy brand, and I want to get a good result before attacking some fairing pieces on my bike.

    Thanks in advance!

I've never had very good luck with Duplicolor, to be honest. I eventually just broke down and went HVLP. Much better, but not really convenient.

Some Auto paint suppliers can mix and fill rattle bombs for you. It's easiest if you have a paint code they can use.

As far as clear goes, I haven't used it, but this stuff seems to be the best in a rattle can:

Wear a respirator (not a dust mask) if you get into the auto stuff...

some of them have spectrometers too, they can match anything even faded factory paint

I did some touch up once on my SV tank when I had well over 100k, went to a local auto paint store (Sanel)with my tank , the put the spctrometer on it, mixed me rattle can can of base, also picked up rattle can of clear coat

www.colorrite.com has factory matched paint available in rattle-cans, and they have their clearcoat in a rattle-can too. Kind of expensive but I used their Yamaha blue on my bike and it came out pretty damn near a perfect match.

Thanks for the help guys! I may just break down, get custom mixed paint in a can, and pick up a cheap spray setup for my compressor.

I think the chemicals they use to keep the paint aerosol are what attribute to the yellowing in the clear-coats.

I'll be in contact with that place in Leominster!

Sherwin Williams Auto Paints in Medford will mix any color in a rattle can for you also. They also carry the 2K clear coat (catalyzed clear) which works very very well, and pretty much any other supplies you need for a complete paint job.
