Carb's....not the kind that make you fat

Okay, my 92 GS400 has some fueling issues. runs fine above 2k but wont idle for shit and the engine races when given gas. I've dumped the bad fuel and put in new stuff with a little sea foam. cleaned out the airfilter. Checked vacuum lines. New oil and filter. Now I'm down to the carbs and I'm assumeing the pilot jets are dirty.

Anyone have a good place to clean and sync carbs? I don't really want to take it to the dealership and I don't want someone off craigslist. Any suggestions? I have cash!!!!!

is it a dual carb setup? have you tried just taking them apart and spraying the jets with some carb cleaner?

harrys in northboro would set you up, but it wouldn't be cheap i'm sure.

If you're comfortable pulling the carb rack off, you're 99% of the way to cleaning them yourself. Pull the bowls off, remove the pilots, and clean them with a very fine wire.

FWIW.......Sounds like what my ex250 does every time i let it sit for more than a week. Mine's prone to carb clogs, I'd take em off and clean em out, my boyfriend took mine off yesterday and it wasn't too bad. I have no idea how to clean them, so a friend is coming to help, but carb cleaner and wire were part of the list of needs. Good luck!

Having done the same on my GF's Ninja 250 three times, I'm pretty sure that you can pull the pilot jets with the carb rack on the bike (haven't gotten to try it out though). The GS500, no idea, but anything is possible.

Re: Carb's....not the kind that make you fat

It's a GS400 so it has 4 carbs. I have no problem taking them off and cleaning them myself. My worries are synching them. I only have a home made manometer for when I had the SuperHawk with two carbs. That was easy, hook it up and adjust on screw while running. Synching 4 carbs is tricky and my patience isn't so good. I'd be willing pay someone with experience/knowledge to take them apart and make them good. Carbs scare me. I have fat fingers and not such a sensitive touch. I'm good had stripping heads off screws too.

If you don't 'de-rack' the carbs you won't need to resync them.

agreed. you just need to clean them. I did a thread on another forum about cleaning carbs on a zx6r... I'll post it here too.

on my vmax you have to synch after you pull them even if you haven't had to unrack. mines easy to synch tho, don't have to remove tank or anything. they sell some cheap 4-port synchers on ebay or I have one, we could maybe work something out (i swing up or you swing down)

I'm sure someone on here has written up the homebuilt carb synch tool. Mine works great.

How much is a little,,, I put a full pint in my tank when the carbs seem dirty and the idle is crappy, that's in a 5 gallon fuel tank,,, run it, get it warm and let it sit a day then do it again. Using this method I have had good results, and considering I have six carbs it is a real work saver.

The can calls for 1oz/gallon. I drained the old gas out of the tank and carbs, fild'er up with clean gas and put in a little over 3oz of seafoam (tank hold 4.2 gallons).

If the pilot jets are indeed plugged (they probably are) then running the bike with seafoam will do nothing but make the bike run lean, which is not great for the motor.

PM'ing Bergs will improve your chances of success.

If, after sitting for short periods of time, your bike is still doing it after running fine for a while, I'd suspect water in the bowls/tank.

Easy/cheap to drain both and start fresh. My buddies GS750 of a similar era would let water come in the gas cap vent. We drained the bowls and saw droplets of water. Turns out his fuel had quite a bit of water.

Inline filter + a big flexible sticker magnet that you can stick over your gas cap may solve your problem after draining the bowls and tank. Hell, even a sheet of saran wrap would help to determine if water is the culprit.

Thanks for all the assistance and suggestions. The first thing I did when I got the bike home was dump the tank and drain the carbs. It was nasty.

Bergs is coming to the rescue. We are figuring out a time and a place. In meantime here's a pic of the little devil. Suprisingly quick for a 400 and I only paid for the brakes and suspension. The bike was free with 6k miles.

Well, technically I paid $1500 for it but I got two sets of EBC HH pads, the EBC disc, racetech springs, raceteck gold valves, wilburs remote res. shock and a new XSO chain all included in the original boxes unused so yeah, kind of a free bike if all that stuff is added up.
