anyone have experience with what happens, when you don't follow protocol?
I got an OEM #'d battery from Autozone.
I filled the battery with appropriate acid levels, but only waited 5 minutes (instead of 1 hour) before putting it on a battery tender. It was on the tender for a total of 30 minutes when I rolled it out of the garage and started the bike (it started just fine) and rode to Boston from the Worcester area. I let it sit outside the club for 3 hours and came back where it started just fine. I then rode back, and now it's back on the tender until I ride it again.
Did I just drastically reduce the life of the battery?
Even so, damn was it worth it to get out there (especially tonight)
...well, minus the near-low side at the mass pike entrance
