    just a quick question

The last time I changed my oil I used Spectro 10W-40, which was about $7-8 per quart. My question is wether or not 4 stroke ATV oil will work the same. Both oils are use for wet clutch systems and provide sufficient thermal protection. The only difference that I can see is the amount of rpm's that the oil will be subject to, not to mention the huge price difference. Thanks

    just a quick question

ATV oil has additives which help it work in very high heat, hard working conditions. It can work in a bike, but I would rather run bike oil in my bike with a high ester content.

If price is an issue, Maxima is a very reasonably priced oil that is a very good product. Maxima Premium 10/40 is your basic dino oil that should run about 5-6 bucks a litre.

Or run whatever is on sale at Wally World.

    just a quick question

my last oil change I used Mobil 1 20w50 Motorcycle oil.... technically it's labled V-twin oil, but the only difference between that & the Inline 4 oil was the viscosity. The I4 oil was 10w40. My manual states i can use 20w50 so i used it... they didn't have the 10w40 & i'm sure my bike could use the extra viscoisty when i'm on the track spinning 10-14k rpms

I've had it in there for about 5k miles & have had no issues.... i'll be using the same oil next time very soon if it's available when i go shoppin. Pretty sure it was about 6 bucks a qt

Regular Spectro 10w40 is $4.05 per quart at the local dealer near me. I use this oil in my streetbikes, dirtbikes/motard and my quad.

I'm guessing by the price you're using Golden Spectro Synthetic blend? Don't waist your money and just go with the regular spectro oil. I have always done all my own oil changes so I get to see the oil that comes out when I change it, the synthetic oils look just as dirty as the dyno in the same miles

You've been using it for 5k miles or it's been 5k miles sence you changed your oil? That's a lot of time on oil in a bike where the clutch contaminates the oil in less than 2k miles

    just a quick question

Pete - 5K is a LONG time for bike oil.

I run Motorex PowerSynth 4T and I still change every 2000 miles.

I would go 3K MAX on bike oil between changes. Wet clutches and transmission gears wreak havoc on oil.

    Thanks for the help

Everybody thanks for the insight on this topic. I just figured that I would ask to see what some of the other guys do. The money is not the issue, so I will just use the recommended motor oil. Thanks again.

i think that oil is aimed at H-Ds. they use separate motor oil than clutch/tranny oil.
i wouldnt run that anymore Pete

    just a quick question

    oil is the bikes blood=life
use the proper recommended oil---it is specifically made for its aplication------much research+development goes into it----
Synthetic oils are much better than regular oils--and you CAN'T tell by looking at it--synthetics reduce friction and have different additives
a great oil at a reasonable price is AMSOIL synthetic!

p.s.--make sure you drain the last few drops out of the container because that's where all the viscosity settles!

    just a quick question

I go 6000 miles between changes all the time with Mobil 1 15W-50 automobile oil. Works fine and my bikes run perfectly with it. Change it sooner and you are wasting your money in my opinion. It costs about 25 bucks at walmart in the big 5 quart jugs. Has a gold colored cap (used to be red colored when it was only 19 bucks a bottle).
