R6 caliper rebuild

Looking at rebuilding my new calipers before I throw them on for the season. I have been looking at online fiches for a few days and I think I know what I need, but want to be absolutely sure before I pull the trigger.

09 R6 calipers and here is the fiche with the parts I think I need...

I need # 5,7,16 and 18 right? If that's the case why the hell are they so damn expensive? They are freaking seals for christ sakes. Any one have a better deal then that?

GSXR caliper seals are like $40.

Just take the calipers apart (you will need a special tool to open them on the R6 calipers) and clean them and reuse the existing seals. They are probably fine.
Make sure you don't turn them inside out when you reinstall them and lube them with fresh brake fluid.

Yes street bike. I have pretty bad drag on my stock calipers and do not want the same issue once the new ones go in. Ya know do it right the first time kind of deal.

Degs I do not have that tool. What's the price on one of those or if you have it could I throw a few bucks your way to do it? I do not have a compressor to get the pistons out anyways.

without the compressor, then it cant be done.
he only has Honda & GSX-R special tools.

i've never known anyone to rebuild R1/R6 calipers....race or street. i think you'll be fine without touching them.
just install them, take the pads out, pump the lever a few times to push the pistons out a little & clean them with a toothbrush w/ brake cleaner on the brush.
it's what i do every other race weekend on my GSXR calipers

I think you would be fine without touching them. I still haven't touched my 06 calipers and they are still great.

Hey I'm down with saving a few bucks. Next question then. I ordered new brake line bolts but didn't receive washers. What can I use instead or do I have to order specific crush washers?

i reuse crush washers all the time, even though you're "supposed" to replace them every time

Like Jim says. Clean them well and install them. They are much better than gixxer ones.
I don't have the special tool. I can get hold of one if needed though.

Just $0.02 that I heard from a local race mechanic regarding cleaning calipers. He actually reccomends not using brake cleaner to clean the calipers, says that the brake cleaner can actually swell the seals and contribute to more drag and stiction between the pistons and seals, with ensuing pad to rotor drag. His suggestion was to use simple green or some other type of biodegradeable cleaner that isn't quite as agressive as the brake cleaner would be. Simple green definitely works better than I thought it ever would and my brakes work very well without the drag that I have seen when using the brake cleaner in the past.

I often thought about that. Seems wrong to use brake cleaner so close to those seals.

I have heard the same thing from MotoJoe on gixxer.com. I used Simplegreen on my old CBR and that worked very well.

I've seen cans of brake cleaner specifically state not to use it on the rubber parts.

i use brake cleaner to brush my teeth

Also, if you have radial calipers make sure you pump up the brake and hold the lever while the bolts are loose and THEN tighten the bolts.

Those seals aren't just Any old rubber though. They have to take brake fluid without swelling. Still, brake cleaner is pretty solvent.
