Question R6 Clip-on broke; Replace stock or aftermarket?

    Hey guys,

Looking for some advice on best way to go fixing my clip-on. I low-sided and did some minor damage, the worst of it was snapping off the stock right hand clip-on on my '04 R6.

I (used to) do most of the work on my bikes myself but have never replaced clip-ons before. Also, live downtown Boston and don't have much workspace these days, and doing more than basic stuff in a dark public parking garage sux. Surfed around for replacement options and Vortex prices look good and I've used their rearsets and thought they were nicely made. Also looked at Woodcraft (also nice stuff) and Graves which I've heard good things about, but they cost a bit more.

So I was wondering what the best way to go is: should I order a stock replacement clip-on from Yamaha or just order a set of Vortex clip-ons? I generally like to upgrade when I break things, but not sure how this job would be to do where I keep the bike now. If I had a good garage space it would be a no-brainer and I would just go with the Vortex and figure it out, but am a bit hesitant to go that route if it is a very involved job. Do I have to drop the forks? Is changing out all the controls a pain? I do have front and rear stands to use and a decent amount of tools. I had a shopmanual in pdf form but lost it when my hardrive crashed so I should get another, anyone have a link to free '04 R6 manual?

    Thanks for any advice.

R6 Clip-on broke; Replace stock or aftermarket?

Clip-ons are easy to replace. Woodcraft is even easier due to the two piece clamp design. Because of that ya don't have to lift the the front end off the ground & pull the fork tubes down. If you decide to go aftermarket I'd go w/ those. Just gotta look into clearance issues since they're lower than stock.... and because they're lower, some people wouldn't call that an upgrade.

Getting a stock replacment should be cheap enough if ya scour ebay. you can also check www. ronayers.com That's what I did when i broke mine. (in adition to getting woodcraft clip-ons)

R6 Clip-on broke; Replace stock or aftermarket?

just curious, why would you have to drop the forks? Doesn't the lower triple still hold them tightly?

or perhaps I am misinterpreting what "drop" means?

Well i can help you part with that Woodcraft set, that would work out great. I'm going to be in Cambridge tonight, I could stop by and give you cash for them. Or I could get them sometime later this week too, if that works better.
