Simple. Twist the grip to WOT then see if you can manually turn the linkage on the TBs any further.

(keep in mind, I know nothing about an SV.... Generally...)

(Assuming it's connected) Disconnect the push cable.

Rotate the throttle all the way open, as far as you can with the grip.
Push the "wheel" in the "open" direction. If it goes further, there's meat left on that bone .

Neither is truely a push cable. Cables can't push (effectively). They both pull. One pulls the throttle open, the other pulls it closed (if necessary).

Agree, neither truly push. But if that one you don't really need is there, it could restrict you from opening the throttle body / butterfly open further. I'm not sure how much slack there is on the SV, so I' was being overly cautious with generic instructions...

that doesnt seem off to me. i dont have a speedo on my SV but the KTM has similar speed and shift points as the SV and i saw 110 at NYST (slightly less at NHMS) in full tuck and i know that speedo reads a little high. depending on gearing an SV doesnt do much more than 110

My speeds were similar. So are my lap times. I'm on a gen 1, he's on a gen 2. But the riders seem to be close.

Still, check the throttle body. It will only take you a few minutes. Then you'll know.

Re: R6 Throttle Tube or Shorter Travel (rotation) Trottle for SV650, Gen 1 Race bike

There are two different R6 throttle tubes. One is gigantic (50mm and white) and allows 1/6 turn on the SV, without modifying anything for the 1st gen. I wouldn't recommend it, you don't have to re-grip ever, but the bike is really digital and unless you're very precise you loose that fine throttle control necessary in the first milliseconds of roll on.
There is a more standard 1/5 turn on the SV from the R6 or R1 and they are black. They offer the best compromise between control and being able to snap the throttle open without much re-grip (still some for me) after you get past the initial roll on.

As an aside, Eric would probably tell you to adjust your grip to more like a doorknob, and you can turn much more without a re-grip. Personally, I don't like the feel I get from the brake lever with his method, but I'm sure he is right.

What fine throttle control necessary? An SV is either full on, or full off, unless you're launching.

If you want a motion pro unit and have a gen 2 sv you can pick on up right from motion pro or any dealer, thats how I ended up with on on my Gen 2 bike.

Now my gen 1 sv that is my deicated track bike you have to call motion pro and deal with the custom cable group, they will have you measure the cables base on a drawing, not the first time they have done this. They will then make the kit for you, full revolver kit with different cam's in it. Downside is it takes 1.5 weeks and its about 180 out the door. Upside is its more reliable, built to the bike, and you can change the cam in about 5 minutes.

I did a single lap in the 17's maybe more if I hadn't looped the damned thing in T1 and broken my ass.

But I've always treated the SV's throttle like a light switch.

This thread confused the fuck out of me. I want a shorter/quicker throttle. The stock one is way too long on the SV

Should I just get an R6 one and call it a day?

Re: R6 Throttle Tube or Shorter Travel (rotation) Trottle for SV650, Gen 1 Race bike

    Been there done that

Did it to a couple of R6 tubes. Had a super short throw. Worked flawlessly, but then I had the issue with it getting accidentally forced past the full closed stop and went back to the stocker. Haven't bothered futzing with it since. May do the zip tie trick to the stocker over the winter. More reliable.

    Remove throttle tube
Scuff the cam a little with sandpaper
Superglue ziptie (with matching width) around the cam to increase diameter
Wrap string or safety wire around it to ensure firm contact while glue dries
    Reinstall and adjust cables
Die in a fire if it jams WFO (DIAF at your own risk)
