reinstalling a caliper

    reinstalling a caliper

I pulled off the rear caliper on a 1998 RM125 to get the old brake pin removed and new threads heli-coiled in.

All the brake fluid from the caliper was emptied.

The brake fluid level in the reservoir is full.

I read the clymer and they didn't really describe how to re-install the caliper, aside from mounting it to the swing arm; which I did.

How do I get my rear brakes working again?

Do I just re-attach the banjo bolt and bleed the brakes?

Yes, the caliper is on the disk right? You got a lot of bleeding to do.

Would filling the slave cylinder then unbolting it and raising it and then cracking the bleeders and allowing it to gravity bleed be easiest?

Yes, it will be easier with the caliper unbolted and hanging low. Air will get trapped in the caliper, so a few bleeds at the caliper banjo bolt early on will help. Back bleeding with a syringe helps as well. Fun times.

rear calipers are pretty easy actually... since there's only 1 line it makes it that much easier. Yeah... just bleed it and you're good to go. Make sure the caliper bolts are torqued down to spec as well.

I found it effective in bleeding if you bleed the banjo bolt, then use the bleeder screw. basically pump it up, crack the banjo, close .. repeat a couple times.. then move to the screw.

    Re: reinstalling a caliper

Rear calipers are fun - you have a small master cylinder hooked up to a relatively large caliper. If you don't have any of the syringes to back bleed - patience is your best tool.

Fill the reservoir, open the bleeder (or take it out completely), push down on the brake lever with the bleeder open, put your finger over the bleeder (or hole) when you let the lever up. Repeat, repeat, repeat. It'll take a while before you see fluid at the caliper.

If you took it out - put the bleeder back in the caliper and start bleeding as normal.

I have also applied a small vacuum to a line hooked to the bleeder as I have pushed down on the lever to speed things up.

thanks for the response guys...unfortunately impatient me rode the bike with the brake pin lightly seated, and lost the pads and the pin. I got new pads, but am still awaiting the pin...

Ted: I might be heading your way for the vacuum pump...will let you know
