RSV4 "Urgent Service" light

    RSV4 "Urgent Service" light

RSV4 threw this warning at me today on my way into work. I pulled over, checked all fluids and what I could see roadside and everything was fine. Did a google search from my phone and found that it could be throttle bodies or a MAP sensor.

Turned around to ride it home because it started, idled, and seemed to run like normal. Found that the RPM's were limited to about 8500 where it ran into a wall and sounded like it was hitting a timing retard/soft rev limiter.

Anyone other owners have this issue?

    Re: RSV4 "Urgent Service" light

From some stuff on Apriliaforum.com, it could be the throttle demand sensor (for which there may be a recall, but not sure if it goes back to 2010), air pressure sensor, oil pressure sensor, or TPS. The fact that the bike won't rev past 8500 points me toward the TPS, unless the ECU automatically limits this when the light comes on. You'd really have to have the code read my a dealer to be sure, as it could be anything.

I couldn't find any recalls. Basically I found the same stuff you did. The tool to plug into the bike only costs about $4000 so ill be bringing it to Seacoast soon.

Went through all the electrical connectors in the tail and didn't find anything disconnected, shorted, or broken. I can't check the relays (or don't know how to) to see if that is the issue.

edit: Also sounds like the butterflys and actuators are running/testing as they should. Sounds like a throttle position sensor possibly.

    Re: RSV4 "Urgent Service" light

I believe the limit of rpm is caused by the bike going into Urgent service mode (limp home).

That's what I thought too, but others on the AF1 forum describe as not being so subtle. This sounds more like traction control than anything. Maybe mine is telling me I have too much power and I can't use it all. Hahaha

Does the 2010 have traction control?

On a semi related note, how do I turn off the regular service wrench icon?

You'll need to access the service menu on the dash using code 12412 and select "reset coupon" to clear the service icon on the dash which will appear around 600 miles.

Nope, the 2010's had no traction control. I think the 2012 APRC ones were the first to have it.

You might be able to reset your service icon if you go into diagnostic mode through the dash menu. With the key on and bike off, find the diagnostic part of the menu. The code I found to get in was 12412. Futz around in there and you might be able to reset it. Mine hasn't come on yet so I'm not sure if you can do it without a dealer.

    Edit: ^^^^what he said.

    At Roadside?

Roadside pulled out of Aprilia early last year and never bought the tooling or training to work on RSV4's. I went to talk with Dan just after I bought it last year and found this out.

I'd heard the talk. Didn't realize that it had happened. Good luck with it Jason.

    RSV4 "Urgent Service" light

Yeah, it's too bad. They just didn't have the business to support it any more. I think they had a couple RSV's and SXV's that sat for a year or two without selling.

I will be placing a call to Seacoast tomorrow though. Hoping there was a recall on this issue...

Be careful what you mess around with in that service menu. Having said that you can reset the wrench and you should be able to see what codes are stored as well.

Isn't that the truth. I remember when a good set of screw drivers, Allen wrench's and a socket set was all you need to get it done. Now you need to start with your laptop and hope the bike tells you whats wrong!!!
