Gear Indicator installation

Guys,

I've been thinking about installing one on my bike because i'm getting tired of keeping track of what gear I'm in while I'm riding.

How do they install? How do they know what gear you are in?

what difference it make what gear your in?

Only time i need to know what gear i'm in is when i'm coming to a stop, or if i'm on the highway & wanna be in 6th... in either case I just click till it doesn't click any more aside from those two instances it doesn't matter to me much. only thing a gear indicator would do for me is instantly satisfy my curiosity.....

they make some models that plug into the harness, the rest you have to splice in. Napa has some heat shrink with solder built in, I user these. It's a digital display, and it takes about two or three seconds at each gear change. I installed mine after riding cross-country, I tried to hit seventh gear a thousand fucking times and thought this would help. It's just a distraction (imo) I wouldn't want it at a track day.

First off, if your bike has an ECU for fuel injection then it will likely have a gear position sensor. I can't say what all bikes have but all of the ones I have seen have been a rotary switch that grounds one of 6 or 7 wires depending on if your transmission is a 5 or 6 speed (1-5 and neutral or 1-6 and neutral).

All the system does is recognize which wire is pulled low and displays it on a seven segment display. The good systems will give you a cable that will hook in-line with the main connector on your ECU. The cheaper ones will have you splice into your harness. If you have any doubt in your wire splicing skills, definitely pay the extra money for one with a pre made cable.

They are also very easy to make. I made a microcontroller based one for a friend of mine that also acted as an adjustable shift light. Unfortunately the hardest part is making the display look like it was installed at the factory.
