    'letrical system.

Hi peoples.. first post since signing up, looks like a good chat group.

Anyway, maybe I can help with the understanding of electrical
    systems on your putts.
First of all.. NEVER disconect the battery when the engine is running unless you want to spend some $$ on a new regulator/rectifier.

Your 'lectrical system consists of 3 parts:

Battery- stores power for starting and server as a "capicator" for smoothing out the bumps/ripples when the engine is running.

Regulator/rectifier- rectifier changes ac (produced by the alternator) to dc which the bike uses and the battery stores.
regulator controls the voltage that feeds the bikes system, ususlly about 13.5 to 14.5 volts.

Alternator- generates power to supply the needs of the bike.
There are 2 types of alternators in use today.
    - perminate magnet, this uses a perminate type magnet that rotates inside the stater, as it rotates, power is generated in the stater and is dependent on engine rpm to generate power. The faster the rotor turns, the more power produced - up to a point.
Usually located inside the engine cases and oil cooled. Viragos,
    Magnas etc.

    - extenal excited alternator uses a rotor that requires an external power supply to make the rotor a magnet, this type is not rpm dependent and will make good power at low rpm's. As more power is required, the stronger the magnet is made thus the more power output. They are usually located on the outside of the engine, eg. GL1500, ZG1000, ZX9 B modles etc. designed like an automotive type system.

    Hope this helps..

    Gene

    New Starter????

that was a very good explanation- thanks.
I finally narrowed down the problem. One of my plugs is geting fouled up. I can take it out- clean it- put it back in and then the bike runs great until it starts fouling up again . At that point my bike runs on 1 cylinder and then every now and then the 2nd cylinder decides to kick in. Very jerky throttle when that happens!!
So I figure there has to be something wrong with the fuel delivery/ air/fuel mixture in that carb.
