Suzuki Bandit won't start

    Re: Suzuki Bandit won't start

I feel dumb, I didn't pull the clutch lever in when starting in neutral. Muscle memory. My battery wasn't fully charged, but it seemed enough to show you guys what the bike does. I was in a bit of a hurry.

Ok, so it's trying but doesn't have enough battery to get the job done.

Toss the battery, put a new one in. Even a cheapie from Walmart, as long as it's new. That way you're not chasing a bad, dead from age battery.

I thought the same thing, so I put the battery from my 998 in. Same results.

I need to buy a new one anyway so I'll try it.

Well then, might be time for "Carsick, after Dark". Should I be the e-thug, the cranky old man who hates everything (except the Donald), or the new chick who's up for anything fun?

edit- this sounds pretty weird without quoting Iglu.

Drain the oil, pull the plugs. Spin it over a few times with the drain open and plugs out. Note how much oil came out and what it calls for in the book as well as how much splatter you get from the plug holes.

Jump it from your car or 6 hour charge

Blow some ether (starting fluid) down the throats

Chuck the gas , examine tank for rust, coat with kreme if rust

first 3 tanks double dose of Seafoam will clean her out

    Enjoy they are great UJM's

Ether is not the way to go.

If the engine doesn't fire up it's time to look into why. No sense in continually hosing an intake on an engine that won't fire and stripping the oil off the metal surfaces in the process.

Ether is how you start a date, not how you start a bike.

Here is my plan on action, which I've already started.

A little WD40 down plug holes for good measure
    Change Plugs
    Change Oil and filter
    Carb Clean and Rebuild
    Fresh Gas
    New Battery

Getting this carb out is on the only difficult part.

    Re: Suzuki Bandit won't start

I'd skip the WD40 down the plug holes, if it's turning over and it has good oil you should be fine. If you're paranoid, put a little motor oil down the plug holes and then wind it over with the starter, plugs out to spread it around.

Any advice on this choke cable? I got one throttle cable off but the other is completely inaccessible in the carburetor a current position.

Backing that adjuster out did the opposite of what you want, it took up all the slack in the cable. You want that adjuster all the way in, not out.
Best way is to dial that adjuster all the way in, dismantle the pod on the bar and unhook the control side of the cable. This will give you max slack.
If it comes to it, you should be able to fish the carb bank out with the choke cable still attached. May be the best way to reinstall too.

I remember pulling those carbs, was a pain in the ass. One of the reasons I swore off I4's. Twins and thumpers are easier to work on in this respect.

Can you pull the metal elbow backwards and out and then pull the barrel out once you have some slack?

I remember now. With enough slack you can pull the 90-degree bend formed in the cable sleeve out of the standoff that holds it with the cable still attached to the carb. Then you can swing the cable down and unhook the cable end from the carb. It's a bitch unless your hands are small. Even then.

You would think, but it takes the slack with it.

Bless you. Came out easily when I screwed it back, and now my choke actual works.

The gas and the tank has cracked out the with water

all that will com out of the petcock is water and fungus..into your carbs... dump it

Starting fluid used with care is fine and will tell you minimally if she POPs then ignition is fine which I would suspect

There is an automatic petcock so the carbs would only have 1 bowl full of gas dry up NOT a lot of contamination

My 2002 drz250 I awakened after 8 years as above and it ran like it was the day before

There was barely any gas in the tank. NO rust. It hadn't been ridden since 06, did gas have a lot of ethanol in it back then?

So far the carb doesn't look too bad, but Derek and I will probably rebuild it anyway.

That's likely the copper components reacting to the moisture content.

Be prepared because those things are probably going to be a mess.

That's what came out of the carb of a Chinese scooter I had. It's been sitting way too long to work properly, you'll most likely need to tear it apart and clean it out or even possibly rebuild it completely. You should also probably flush all the gas lines.
