    Best SV650 Clutch

    Hey Ya'll,

I have a first gen SV for the track, stock engine except as exhaust. What is everyone running for a clutch? I'm mostly just talking about plates. Should I just run stock replacements or is their a favorite amongst SV racers? Thanks.

    Re: Best SV650 Clutch

I changed my G1 clutch out for a G2. Most of the parts are actually the same. However, the basket itself is a little more sturdy and has the strengthening ring around the basket notches.

I got mine, complete, for under $100 on eBay. It was off of a 2009 salvage bike that have extremely low mileage on it. It looked almost brand new.

As far as plates go, stick with OEM. This comes directly from Gregg Spears.

Some info from my research, threads I started on SVRider and TWF Racing:

Sweet! I'll keep my eyes open for a second gen set up, for now I'll order some OEM plates, should I grab some Barnett springs too? Or stick to OEM there as well?

OEM are fine. If you do go aftermarket, go with EBC.

One thing about the G23 clutch, you will need to remove the large case cover in order to install the G2 clutch. The ring around the clutch basket won't clear the small case cover. So you'll need to also order the gasket for the case cover.

I usually get my OEM parts from ronayers.com.

Correct, but you will need to hold the basket while you tighten the nut that holds it into place.

overkill. its a stock SV. i see no reason to have a "sturdier" clutch or even better plates. is it slipping? does it need replacing? i have a gen 1 race bike thats well over 60k miles on it, with the original clutch. it still doesnt slip. it will wheelie without issue when i clutch up 2nd gear and i use the clutch for all shifts (up and down).

What they said. Stock clutch is pretty sturdy. If it doesn't need replacing, don't replace it. If it needs replacing, go with OEM parts.

Like these guys said. Orm plates and springs. The gen 2 basket is nice but not really needed for a stock motor.

    Re: Best SV650 Clutch

Probably should have read this before hand.. but whatever. Just ordered a new EBC "heavy duty" clutch kit for my SV track toy. Also bought a used clutch basket to have on hand in case mine is really thrashed.

My issue is the clutch is erratic and getting worse. Neutral is difficult to find with the engine running and I've had some issues with false neutrals. I've been advised to pull the clutch apart and inspect the fingers on the outer basket. Expectation is that the fingers are worn and the fibers are not releasing. I've been advised to file or sand the fingers smooth or replace the basket if it is really forked.

Being the kind that plans ahead (yeah, right) I have bought a new clutch kit (including friction disks, plates, and springs) and used basket assembly. Want to have all on hand before I crack into this thing.

Which seal(s) do I want? This is a gen1 so there is an outer clutch side cover and an inner that covers the water pump as well. Can I remove and replace the entire clutch including basket by removing just the smaller, outer cover only? Would rather not disturb the water pump seal if I don't have to. I am using all gen-1 parts here, including the basket.

Check the basket. If it's getting notchy, find one on eBay that's not. The best thing I ever did for the clutch was change the basket from a G1 to a G2. It's been absolutely flawless ever since. And I've also only have to replace the fiber plates once since I changed out the basket.

    Re: Best SV650 Clutch

    Yup. I have a used G1 basket en-route.

My Q is, which gaskets should I have on hand for this? I read you indicated the G2 basket would not fit through the hole for the smaller side cover. But will the G1 basket?

Yes, it will fit. It's the support ring around the G2 basket that makes it not able to be removed. However, with the minimal amount of room that you have out of the smaller cover, I would get a gasket for the larger cover and remove that cover when changing out the basket.
