The front plug, at least on my '04, is a bit tricky, but it can definitely be done by simply swinging the radiator out of the way. You won't have a lot of clearance, but it is enough (just barely). I don't believe the fairings have to come off, but I don't have the S so I don't know for sure.

I wasn't giving him crap. I see plenty of Champions come out of service bikes and it makes me cringe every time. The Densos really threw me for a loop.

Should be even easier with a Gen 1. He doesn't have to deal with the oil cooler being in the way as well as the radiator.

1st we want a macro photo of the plug tip. The 1 shown is fouled probably from all the choke on running.

I believe the Iridium hype.. Put em in with a dab of antisieze and forget them

Noel enough with the crap find me a cheap V-Strom

The side covers plug into the upper sides of the radiator w/2 big grommetts.
remove the 2 recessed allen bolts on the side covers, & pull, the covers will free themselves from the Rad. assy. , this will make moving the rad. a lil easier.
put a piece of cardboard on the backside fins of the rad. to protect em. while removing/installing your new plugs.
I personally run Irdiums cause the ft. is such a bitch to get at..........& after 18,000mi. they still look like new.
I built a 2"X 5" alum. plate to deflect H20 from the ft. tire, away from the ft. plug area,
I simply mounted it across the bottom of the radiator & have never flooded the ft. cyl. in the rain ever since i installed it 50,000mi. ago.
If you look close.....you can see it in this pic.

I have loosed up the side panels. I have pulled the panels free from the radiator. I have removed the nut holding the horn assembly in place and removed the horn so the top of the radiator can fall away from the engine. I have removed the bolts at the top of the radiator.

I have attached several photos. two are on the right and two on the left. On the right side there is a connection at the top near the fill cap. On the left there is a large 1 inch plus hose about mid way up the side which runs straight to the mid engine area. Both of these hose connections are holding the radiator to the engine. I cannot pivot the radiator away. and there does not seem to be enough slack for flex in these connections to move the radiator. Do I have to drain down the radiator to unattach the hoses??

I was planning on some type of deflector as well under the radiator. I would really like to see a picture of your fix and how you chose to mount this mod.

I'll take some close up pics 4 u tomorrow.
The radiator only needs to be moved a small amount in order to get the plug out, approx: 2"" forward

I am to remove all the radiator mounting bolts and drop? I have only removed the top bolts. There are three bolts holding the radiator in place. The way everyone describes moving the radiator away from the engine block to me it seemed I would be pivoting using the top or bottom. I think I get it now. Or at least I am going to try removing all the mounting bolts and sliding the radiator along the face of the engine.

This is what it looks like on the second gen. You just undo the bottom bolts and it pivots out of the way. (I know this isn't what yours looks like, but I couldn't find a first gen picture)

I can only assume it's similar for the first gen.

You MUST remove ALL the fasteners on the Rad.!!!...esp. the 10mm. bolt on the head.....you do NOT drop it...........you push it foward just enough to get a ratchet, extension & socket on the plug.
heres pics of my homemade shield & mudflap..i simply used some RTV to adhere it to the bottom edge of the radiator.

    Re: SV650S 02 poor acceleration

Well I am back. I finally got some time to get in there and remove the front plug.

OH my, look what I found another 'garbage ass spark plug'. See attached pictures.

I would love to hear how I am going to clear out the thread from all the dirt and grim which is in there. I DID NOT drop this front plug into the dirt on my way to the photo booth. The spark plug came out in this mess. Can you also see the spider web on the tip? What next? How do I clean the threads up before I put in that new spark plug?? I want to do this RIGHT. No dumb ass work. The bike has had enough of that.

    Re: SV650S 02 poor acceleration

i would also be very appreciative if someone could provide the correct model of NGK to install. I have been over and over several different books and websites. They all seem to have a different model number. Due to my recent move, I am not able to put my hands on my maintenance manual.

    Thanks

    Re: SV650S 02 poor acceleration

new spark plugs are back in. I had to rig up a suction line to get the front plug compression washer out of the cylinder head as it did not come out with the plug. I then had to use a can of compressed air to blast out the drain hole. WOW. was it ever full of dust. once the plug was back in, I used some engine spray cleaner to blast out the remaining dirt. I sure do hope I got the front plug threaded all the way in. the last one I do not think was installed completely. Everything is reattached. I ran the bike. It was a little bit stuttery to get running again. yet it did and i let it run for 10 mins to let the bike warm up.

thanks to everyone who offered helpful advice.
