Tire question for you track boys & girls

The rear on my Brutale is toast and I need to replace. The original tires are both Pirelli Dragon Supercorso - The front still has some life in it so I am not planning on replacing. That said I am not inclined to get another Dragon for the rear as they seem to wear a little quick on the street (which is all I ride) any problems mixing and matching with other Pirelli's or with Conti's? Im looking at the Pirelli Angel for the mileage as well as the Conti road attack.

    Feeback appreciated.

IMHO, it won't make a bit of difference with regards to sane street riding. That said, I wouldn't go out pushing the limits of traction either.

The down side to mixing brands/models is the "shape" of the tire. Different tires handle differently, so having different front and rears could make the bike handle odd.

Also, if you replace the rear now, then the front, then the rear, you'll constantly be chasing a pair. I'd suggest changing both to a tire better suited to the riding you do, you'll probably find that both the front and rear last longer than your current Dragon, which is an aggressive, performance oriented(even the SP OEM model) tire.

I was actually looking at that option. I can get a set of Conti road attacks for $250 with free shipping, while the rear pirelli is looking to be $198 minimum. Truthfully I was not preparing to buy both tires this season - and most years I play the set chasing game any way. I usually wear through two rears for every front, so I am only changing front tires every other season, while a rear will last me about a full season.

Yeah, I usually replace in pairs every other tire change... 2 rears to a front.

Do whatever ya want, but I prefer to stick with matched sets for the reasons mike stated. Unless I really don't like the tires, I wait until I need both to switch make/models.

Those road attacks are great sneakers for the $. I would be buying another set if I owned a bike that I rode on the street like that. If you're looking for a decent high mileage street tire, for short $, you found em.

You don't mention much about several important factors:

    - how many miles did you get out of the rear?

    - how many trackdays, if any? (nevermind, I see now that you have not done any)

    - what's more important... grip or cost or mileage?

    - are you a fair weather rider mainly?

Answering these questions will start you down the right path.

Each tire manufacturer has something for everyone. All too often the rider chooses a tire because they hear they're good... but do not take into consideration that they may be good for that person because they are the "right" tire for their riding.

If you are not riding the same or interested in the same criteria... then it won't be the "right" tire for you - regardless of the brand.

Having said all that, I would not hesitate to put 2 rears to one front as long as it hasn't been over 3 years or so. If it has been that long, I'd be more inclined to change the pair because even though the front may have tread left... it has degraded and will offer less grip than a fresh one.

I don't ride in the rain unless I get caught in it and then it's mainly slab. I commute daily so I need long wear. And I do get aggressive on the weekends. The bike has 5800 miles so that's not bad for the dragon in terms of miles

They don't actually make the dragons anymore. I think I'll put a corsa II or III on it to get me through next season and then I'll change both.

I think you have the Dragon Supercorsa SP, which is an OEM tire, and I believe you're correct, they don't currently make them(not 100% sure because it's not part of the race/track product line). IF you were looking to replace it with the same tread pattern and profile, the Dragon Supercorsa Trackday Pro would work well for you in that respect. However, I think a tire like the Pirelli Diablo Rosso, Dunlop Roadsmart, or Michelin Pilot Road 2 might be a better choice for when you're ready to replace the pair.

That's a smokin deal on RoadAttacks. They far exceeded my expectations on the track, and I love them on the street. That said I just ordered some SportAttacks to see what the slightly stickier offering is all about. Price and longevity can't be beat.
