    TL1000R Stuttering at 8k rpm

Ok im new to TL's this being my first. Its a 1998 TL1000r 25k miles had it about 3 weeks and it was running like a champ. Just put an AMR TRE in. I also ran it very very low on fuel and it has now started sputtering badly at 8k rpm and up. I was wondering if running low and getting the crap at the bottom of the tank would cause this.

Warning: I know nothing about TLs.

Assuming it's carbed. Yep, running it low on fuel, being a 98 could be the problem. You might have sucked crap into the jet. You'll need to clean the carbs.

I have no idea what an AMR TRE is.

TLs are all injected....though a possibility that you picked up some junk from the bottom of the tank it sounds more electrical to me due to the nature of happening over 8k rpm and not at the slower speeds as well.

Check over on tlplanet.com as there may be someone over there that has had the same issue.

You have/had a sensitive fuel pump and filter

They have an internal filter which you probably clogged

Look around tiller/sv/Vstrom sites for the external filter mod

    It will be like new

IIRC, when the TL's battery gets low, it has juice issues at higher R's....check your battery for juice and main connector for corrosion....

It was running great until he did the TRE mod. He did something wrong is my simple guess...

The other thing is if it's happening at higher RPM's, I'd also suggest you may have somehow dislodged the fuel relay switch from it's perch under the seat. It'll run fine at lower RPM's, but once you hit the high notes, it vibrates the shit outta it. That vibrating REALLY fucks up the injection on 'em. Ask me how I know that...

I'm assuming you had the tank off when installed the TRE? I'd double check fuel and vent lines aren't kinked and also check that any electrical connector you took off got put back on.

Tank does not have to be removed for TRE on the tillers. Just to remove the chance of it being the TRE that is faulty, try running without it.

These bikes are fairly easy to troubleshoot. A clogged fuel filter would mean it would be hard to start as well. Check battery health, and hook up a meter to the battery and start the bike to check the rectifier voltage. The voltage you read should rise significantly when you reach above 3,500 rpm.

The best all around solution is to have Mark(tlrman) spend a day with the bike getting it dialed in. It will be the best money you spend.

I was going to say a Bazzaz TRE, but I checked Bazzaz site and MotoMummy and apparently they don't make one for the TLR.

If you're sure the TRE is the issue, I'd say return it / exchange it and try another. Maybe you got the one that was built on a Friday afternoon. If it continues, return it I guess and look for another brand. Ivan's junk is way over priced, careful there. TRE's have dropped significantly in price. A smart TRE (automatic, retains gear indicator, disables itself when it detects neutral) was $130. I got mine for $55.

Re: TL1000R Stuttering at 8k rpm

I went with the Bazzaz, but marshdrummer probably gave you the better advice seeing as in the TLR is older.

You could always try calling Bazzaz and ask if they can possibly help you out. I use to have an older snowmobile and AAEN performance wasn't building triple pipes for it anymore, I called and asked and they said they'd build me a set. Worth a try at least.

I also have a feeling you could find a how-to guide to build your own. Just need to solder wires and possibly buy the harness connections, but you've got the old TRE, you could scavenge the connectors from it. Get the resistor at radio shack for a buck or two and add a switch to shut it off, which makes it easier to start cold.
