    torque range

So I am looking into a torque wrench. What would be the torque range that I would be looking for on a bike?

    Thanks.

    Re: torque range

in my experience it is tough to have just one. Most I see go up to 100 ft/lbs, but dont do smaller stuff well. But a standard 20-100 ft/lb torque wrench will get you pretty far, 3/8" drive.

Just get a 3/8 one. Those go low and high. Find it at the usual places. Craftsman, kobalt, husky, etc. Just be sure to get a digital one, so you don't need to convert stuff.

That's one I've been looking at. Every time I go to Lowes for something else, I stop at the tool crib and look at it,

Hoping I will see a sale sign for ½ off

if you have the cash, the SnapOn 3/8" digital one is pretty nice. range is 5ft/lbs - 120 ft/lbs. it does a variety of measurements: angle torque, inches pounds, foot pounds, nM....

Likely unpopular, but I have all 3 Harbor Freight Pittsburgh torque wrenches (1/4, 3/8, & 1/2). I think I got each with a $10 coupon. I would NOT use these for engine rebuilds or anything where precise is nonnegotiable but for general bike stuff like pinch bolts, caliper bolts, and axles I think they do just fine.

I have the 3/8" and 1/2" Harbor Freight torque wrenches too. My work used to have the means of calibrating torque wrenches before they outsourced it and the 3/8" was within 4% and the 1/2" was within 2%. That definitely surprised me for the price.

I also have a Tekton 1/2" that goes up to 250 ft.-lbs. but never got the chance to calibrate it.

Torqueing the lower coilover bolt on the Raptor needed 400 ft/lbs and a 32mm socket I think. I had a 1/2" 32mm so used a 1/2"to 3/4" adapter.... Sheared it right off. Had to buy a 3/4" 32mm socket, because who doesn't need multiple 32mm's lol

Invest in taller jack stands or use straight wood blocks. mixing them is sketchy.

For sure. I definitely agree, but the blocks were pretty solid and screwed all together to make one piece. I believe I am getting some taller stands for Christmas, I was shopping for taller ones and my wife told me to hold off...

This is the time of year to leave printouts of things you really want out on the computer desk because NOBODY wants a fucking sweater!

I've got all 3 size clickers from Tekton. I've never calibrated them, but I've also never broken a bolt (or lost one) on any of my motos despite having done 4 valve adjustments between 2 bikes over the past few years.

They seem pretty damn good for the price, especially when discounted.

6 point. At that size I just try to get whatever I can. 400+ ft/lbs is a lot of friggen torgue though, and if something lets go it can be bad.
